Local roundup: Cotter scores 15, as Bellefonte girls fall just short of first win
On Saturday in girls basketball action, Bellefonte put together a strong effort, closing the first quarter with a lead and going into halftime with the scored tied. However, a 17-point third quarter from Newport doomed its chances of securing its first win of the season, as it fell by a score of 38-28.
Talia Cotter had a career night for the Red Raiders, posting a game-high 15 points, going 2-for-2 from the line and hitting a three. And for the Bison, Jillian Zerbe led the way scoring wise with ten.
South Williamsport earned a spot against Muncy Monday at Millville for the Mid-Penn West Division championship after erupting for 90 points in a 90-57 win against Bucktail. The Mounties built a 32-7 first quarter lead and won their 11th straight game to set up the rubber match between teams who split two exciting league games earlier this season.
Levi Butler scored 32 points and drained seven 3-pointers in three quarters and was one of four Mounties in double figures. Andrew Walter scored 13 points, Neeko Bowen 12 and Bobby Regan 11. Samir Moy added eight off the bench. Gavin Pick, Aiden Ditty and Teagan Stone all had 14 points for Bucktail and Corbin Pentz 13.
Jersey Shore suffered a 54-49 setback against Troy. Josiah Pesesky had 15 points for Troy and Spencer Martin scored 13 while Trey Teribury added 11. Shore saw a pair of double-digit scorers in Jacob Lorson (14) and Carson Watkins (10).
Lock Haven track and field competed at the Penn State Sykes and Sabock Challenge on Saturday. Reagan Irons and Samantha Trench each achieved a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship qualifying mark in the high jump (5-02.5)
Elizabeth Shultz achieved a PSAC mark in the 800m (2:18.51) run and finished sixth overall.
