Penn State men’s basketball falls to No. 9 Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Penn State men’s basketball team dropped an 87-64 road game at No. 9 Nebraska inside Pinnacle Bank Arena Saturday afternoon. Freshmen Ivan Juric and Kayden Mingo led the Nittany Lions with 13 points apiece. Juric notched his second double-double of the season by adding 10 rebounds.

Mingo added six assists, four rebounds and a steal. Senior Josh Reed scored in double figures for the 12th-straight game, finishing with 11 points and five boards.

The Nittany Lions got out to an early 7-4 lead on the back of five points from Josh Reed, but Nebraska’s Pryce Sandfort answered with three-straight 3-pointers in less than two minutes to give the Huskers a 13-9 edge at the first media timeout.

The Nebraska run reached 16-2 as the Huskers owned a 20-9 edge with just over 11 minutes to play. A Dominick Stewart jumper at 8:20 snapped the Husker streak and the Penn State defense limited Nebraska to just one FG from the 11-minute mark to the 4:30 mark.

The Nittany Lion offense wasn’t able to get much of its own going as the Huskers still owned a 24-15 lead before breaking the scoring open with a 9-0 streak over a 2:15 stretch that put Nebraska ahead 33-15 with 1:50 left in the opening term. A pair of free throws from Saša Ciani and a Reed triple ended the first half, but Nebraska carried a 38-20 lead into halftime.

Freddie Dilione V drilled a triple from the top of the key to open the second half and Juric followed with a dunk that quickly had the Nittany Lions back within 13 at 38-25, but Nebraska responded with a 9-0 streak over the next two minutes to take its largest lead yet at 47-25 with 16:06 to play.

The Husker advantage reached as much as 28 at 57-29, but Penn State responded with a 22-8 stretch from 13:41 to 6:35. Kayden Mingo scored seven in the spurt as the Nittany Lions clawed back within 14 at 63-49.

Penn State wouldn’t get any closer the rest of the way, however, as #9 Nebraska grabbed the 87-64 win.
