Shemory is Shore’s lone medalist on first day of district championships

Arriving at Williamsport High School on Wednesday, Jersey Shore freshman Emily Shemory had one goal in mind: reach the podium. The Bulldog wanted to be a top-4 finisher on Wednesday when she swam the 50 free.

She was a tad nervous going in being a ninth grader and having four seniors and a junior in her heat, but Shemory had confidence. And in the end, it resulted with a fourth-place medal.

The freshman Bulldog was Shore's lone medalist on Wednesday to reach the podium when she swam a time of 26.15 to take fourth in the 50 free amid talented competitors.

"Being a freshman, I feel very accomplished. I worked very hard and even though I didn't have a great start, I feel I did my best and put my best foot out there too to get my medal," Shemory said.

Shemory noted that she took ane xtra breath at the flags but that "I think I kept my speed the same throughout."

Shemory's time was behind only Evelyn Panek of Athens (third, 25.50), Samantha Fagan of Bloomsburg (second, 25.41) and Selinsgrove's Holly Grayston (first, 25.01).

"I know that I was one of two freshmen and the rest of the swimmers in my heat were seniors," Shemory said. "So being pushed by my age, I feel like I know in my future I can compete because I did so well as a ninth grader and once I get up to 12th, 11th grade, I know I will excel."

She was satisfied wtih the time that she swam too as it was near her seeded time of 26-flat.

"I was happy. I did gain a little bit, but I was happy with my time and I feel like it was a good time for my age," the Bulldog said.

Shemory was happy as well that being on the podium meant she represented the orange and black of Jersey Shore.

"I am very happy. I'm glad that I got to support my school and show that we are here too," Shemory said with a laugh.

Shemory was one of the few Bulldogs on Wednesday to compete in the championship heat of an event. The only other Bulldog to finish in the top-8 -- only the top 4 receive medals -- was Macy Wilton, a senior who took eighth in the 100 fly with a time of 1:10.44.

"Being my first districts as a high school and being seeded third as a freshman (in the 50 free), I felt vey accomplished in the beginning," Shemory said. "So it was my goal just to medal today because I knew I could do it."

Jersey Shore's girls 200 free relay team was just under one-and-a-half seconds from reaching the podium as they took fifth place. That foursome of Broke Charney, Sierra Derr, Lila Nestlerode and Shemory swam a 1:48.48 for fifth. The fourth-place team was Milton's Julia Stahlnecker, Rachel Goocey, Morgna Cohoon and Larissa Rovenolt (1:47.08).

Bloomsburg's Lucy Diehl, Jordyn Maloney, Anna Yancoskie and Samantha Fagan won in 1:40.39.

Jersey Shore's girls 200 medley relay team had a solid time of 2:02.35, shaving five seconds off their seeded time, but the team was unfortunately disqualified from the event. That foursome consisted of Emily Shemory, Brooke Charney, Macy Wilton and Lila Nestlerode.

Jersey Shore's Lila Nestlerode swam a 2:14.10 in the first of two heats in the 200 free. Sierra Derr, a senior, swam the third heat in the 50 free for Jersey Shore.
