WINGATE – Rolling out the defense.
On Monday, the much-improved Bald Eagle Area boys basketball team hosted a feisty, fast-tempo Mount Union squad in a non-league battle.
The Eagles (4-13) went on to top the Trojans (6-13) in grand fashion, 59-32. It was a night where the Eagles would see eight different players tally points in the win.
Leading things offensively was James Cowan. Cowan was an inside force, posting most of his points down low and always in traffic. He finished the night with a game-high 23 points. Along the way, Cowan also brought down eight rebounds.
Teammate Jackson Yeaney added eight boards and eight points as well.

“We were really active tonight on defense. We had a great practice yesterday. I thought the kids really responded,” said Bald Eagle coach Kris Glunt. “Defensively, we were very active keeping the ball on the perimeter. They got to the paint a few times and we adjusted and the kids did a better job in second half. I also thought we contested well on the perimeter.”
With the inside game working to perfection, Bald Eagle opened up its outside game. Kane Wolf had the hot hand, posting a three in the third.
After a close first half, the Eagles went into the intermission leading by only four points, 21-15. In the third, the home team started to separate itself from Mount Union.
Cowan started the offensive explosion with a shot from underneath as he cut through three defenders to hit the off balanced leaner in the lane.
After a Trojan turnover, the Eagles got the ball into Cowan once again in the lane but this time Cowan dished it off for a backdoor basket from the cutting Yeaney, upping the team’s lead to 25-15.

Bald Eagle Area proceeded to call a time out to get everyone on the same page. It worked, as the Eagles came out and went on a 6-0 run to increase their lead to 33-18.
In the run, Wolf hit his first triple and Cowan scored on an old-fashioned three after hitting a shot and being fouled on the play. He hit the shot from the foul line.
Mount Union got back on the board thanks to Brayden Richards. But the Eagles went back to their bread and butter, getting it to Cowan underneath.
