Monday, the Eagles hosted a tough Bellwood-Antis team in Laurel Highlands action. While the game was closer than the final score indicated the early on, the Devils would distance themselves from the third inning onward to take home the 8-3 victory.

Offensively, Bellwood -Antis was led by Parker Martin (3-for-4 RBI, three runs), Abby Clabaugh (2-for-3 2RBIs, run) and Hayden Taylor (3-for-4). The Bald Eagle Area offense was led by Maelee Yoder (2-for-4, RBI) and Kendall Gavlock (2-for-3).

Picking up the win from the mound for the Blue Devils was Palyan Gregg while Bald Eagle Area hurler Harlee Witherite suffered the hard-fought loss.

“We’re a work in progress. We lost five or six good girls from last year and in reality we still have a good defensive team,” said Bald Eagle Area coach Don Lucas. “We’re going to have to work to get better. It’s early in the season, and I’m not too concerned.”

With the wind blowing in from the outfield, Bellwood went right to work in their first at bats.

Leadoff hitter Karlie Swigart opened the game with a walk. She would move up a base on a single into the outfield by Martin.

Landen McKee loaded the bases with a walk. And Swigart and Martin both scored on an RBI double from Abby Clabaugh, making it an early 2-0 advantage for the Blue Devils.

But the Eagle defense would throw out a runner going home on the ensuing at-bat. Then, they posted a double play to end the inning with the damage being just two runs.

Bald Eagle then cut the Devils’ lead in half in the bottom of the inning.

Leadoff hitter Addyson Burns opened her inning with a walk. Teammate Maelee Yoder followed her up with a single. And Gavlock continued things with a single of her own before Raelee Repasky singled in Burns, making it 2-1.

Bald Eagle’s defense kept Bellwood-Antis off the board in the second. The Eagles then tied the game up momentarily, posting a run in the bottom of the inning.

With two outs in the second, Burns kept the inning alive with a walk. She scored on a double by Yoder, tying the game at 2-2.

But the Blue Devils battled right back in the top of the third, picking up runs. Martin and Claybaugh both scored in the third to extend their lead back out to two.

Trailing 4-2 going into the bottom of the third, the Eagles battled one last time, posting a run to cut the deficit back down to one as Repasky scored to cut it back to one.

But that would be as close as the contest got as the Blue Devils added four more runs while keep the Eagles from impacting the scoreboard again en route to the victory.
