LHU softball endures sweep vs. Shepherd to open busy stretch
The Lock Haven softball team kicked off a stretch of three home games in as many days by hosting Shepherd in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East doubleheader at Lawrence Field on Sunday afternoon. Shepherd swept the twinbill, 8-0 and 3-1.
Game 1: Shepherd 8, Lock Haven 0
In game one, Shepherd came out of the gates on fire, plating four runs in the top of the first to build an early lead.
Shepherd scattered four more runs over the final three innings to lock up an 8-0, run-rule victory.
Keiva Middleton tossed 4.2 quality innings in relief, allowing two earned runs and striking out three.
Four different Bald Eagles recorded hits, including doubles from Blaire Balestrini and Abby Robertson.
Game 2: Shepherd 3, Lock Haven 1
In game two, Shepherd struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the second, but The Haven trimmed the deficit to 2-1 after Erin Van Ness drove in Hailey Irwin with an RBI-single.
However, that was the final run the Bald Eagles could punch across and Shepherd held on for the victory.
Three Bald Eagles recorded hits, while Balestrini recorded her second double on the day.
Despite the loss, Marissa Horn provided a quality start for The Haven and went the distance, while limiting Shepherd to three runs and striking out six.
Sunday was also the program’s annual Knock MS Out of the Park Day.
The Bald Eagles return home Monday to host Kutztown in a PSAC East doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
