Bellefonte boys lacrosse tops Mifflinburg behind unselfish play, 14-1
BELLEFONTE- It was all hands on deck Tuesday night as the Bellefonte boys lacrosse team looked to improve its season record to 4-3 while hosting Mifflinburg in a late afternoon contest at Rogers Stadium. It was mission accomplished for the Red Raiders, as they dominated every aspect of the game, topping the Wildcats, 14-1.
“It’s just good, unselfish playing. They’ve been working hard,” said Bellefonte coach Aaron Aumiller.
“They had a tough game on Saturday, rebounded nicely and did exactly what we asked them to do. They took care of business. Passing was great. They played unselfish, which was really big. That’s what I cared about. They were playing unselfish.”
Defensively, the Bellefonte squad tightened the inside lanes early and often as they were able to keep the Wildcats from even getting a shot off.
Mifflinburg started out playing some stingy defense as well. With eight minutes into the contest, Bellefonte would get possession and find the back of the net. Nate Cherinka hit a one bounce shot from the top of the key, giving the hometown team the early lead.
With 1:11 left in the first period, the Raiders scored again. This time Nash Weaver tickled the twine. Bellefonte led in time of possession as well as points going into the second.
Offensively, the Raiders exploded for an eight point period. Leading the way was Aiden Reed. Reed scored the first of his three-point hat trick night with the first shot of the second period.
Less than a minute later, Gunther K lit it up, making it 4-0 with 10:48 left in the half. Bellefonte continued its offensive pressure as it took the ball from the middle circle and the ball Cherinka at 10:13.
In the process, the Red Raiders’ defense continued to pressure the Wildcats passes forcing them to overthrow and underthrow their targets. Gunther K picked up his second goal of the game at 8:45 with a laser shot past the goalie. He also posted a hat trick in the Bellefonte win as well.
Trailing 6-0, Mifflinburg was forced to call a time out to regroup.
But it would be Gunther K, Aiden Reed and Brennan Huntsinger finishing out the first half scoring as the Red Raiders took a 10-0 advantage into the intermission.
In the second, Bellefonte got three goals in the third and one in the fourth en route to the 14-1 victory.
Bellefonte is back in action Friday as they travel to Dallas.
