BELLEFONTE – On Saturday, the Bellefonte softball team hosted multiple opponents in its annual O’Leary Tournament. In two hard-fought contests against esteemed programs, it ultimately fell short, falling to State College, 1-0, and DuBois, 5-3.

The first game of the morning featured an all-out pitching duel, with State College and Bellefonte combining for 34 strikeouts. Of the 24 batters she faced, Bellefonte sophomore Abby Herr punched out a staggering 19, putting her team in a great position to win.

Ultimately, a six-inning run ended up making the difference, as State College’s Kendall Schenck bat Sarah Mellott home for what ended up being the game-winning run. Schenck’s RBI was one of two hits allowed by Herr and her field, on top of one issued walk.

On offense, Sloan Moore and Adrienne Masullo contributed the team’s lone hits. In what ended up being a two-hit shutout, State College ace P. Moriarta finished with 15 strikeouts to just two walks.

The team’s second game of the afternoon featured a bit more in terms of offensive fireworks, with Bellefonte getting out to a 3-1 lead after three. DuBois responded with four runs in the fourth before holding the Red Raiders scoreless through the last four innings to secure the victory.
