LOCK HAVEN — Bellefonte’s Althea Helms knew entering Friday’s competition at Lock Haven’s High School Classic would be tough in any event. So lining up for the 400, Helms knew that she’d have to run her best to be on the top-3 podium.
And Helms did exactly that. The Red Raider ran a solid race, finishing with a time of 59.33 to be the third-place finisher. She was behind only Hughesville standout Katelyn Temple and State College’s Sarah Kocher. Temple won in 57.54 and Kocher ran a 58.25 for second.
“I would say that I wish I had pushed hard, but it was again, like this race is just getting me into the mentality of what it feels to run at districts and ultimately at states,” Helms said.
That’s the ultimate goal, and Friday serves as a nice appetizer for what districts will bring in terms of competition for Bellefonte and Helms.
“I think it’s a landmark leading up to districts. Lock Haven, it’s a big meet leading up to districts and normally I run pretty good at districts. Lock Haven I don’t always hit my best time at this meet, but it gets me into the season of I may not get a lot of good competition during the season during league meet or something,” Helms said. “An invite like this helps me hit a landmark. Even though 59 isn’t my best time, it’s definitely a landmark for the season and a good start.”

Helms was one of just four runners in the 400 to break the minute mark as Williamsport’s Geiana Whaley ran a 59.65 to take fourth.
Bellefonte had a number of top-8 finishers on Friday, and Helms was glad to see her school having success.
“As a school I think we performed great. My best friend Addi Fry had a crazy PR in the one-mile, she ran a 5:10, she’s never done that so that was a big deal for her,” Helms said. “I think we have good stuff coming in next events (later in the day). … I think we have some good stuff coming.”
Fry PR’d in the 1,600 with her time of 5:10.84, which helped her secure a fourth-place finisih. She trailed only Wellsboro’s Laurek Kosek (4:59.47), Altoona’s Ashlyn Noce (4:59.80) and Williamsport’s Madeline Sanders (5:05.10).
Oh yeah, Helms’ prediction that good stuff was coming later in the day? She was right about that.

Helms finished third in the 200 to again reach the podium with a time of 25.71. She was behind only Wellsboro’s Piper Hoprich, who broke the meet record with a time of 25.09, and State College’s Sarah Kocher, who ran a 25.36.
Shortly after Helms took third in the 400, Landyn Langille ran a time of 41.46 to take a second-place finish in the 300 hurdles, the highest-finish for a Bellefonte athlete on Friday. He was behind only Hughesville’s Kaviko Faulkner, who won in 39.95.
“I think overall I did really well. I was trying to improve my start and last week (at invite) my start was so much better than rest of season. I ran a new PR last week,” Langille said. “Today, I was focused on second half of my race and kind of not stuttering over the hurdles. I think I fixed that and I ran an amazing time today. Got a good goal of mine out of the way.”
Competing with Faulkner and Shikellamy’s Maddox Hoover helped Langille run his time and compete well.
“I think having other people who can run faster times than you pushes you so much because it kind of tells me to run with them or try my best to get ahead of them,” Langille. “It pushes my speed, pushes my capacity to try to get past of them.”

Langille had to try to chase down Faulkner late in the 300 hurdles, but couldn’t quite out-run the Spartan.
“Whenever I see someone go ahead of me, I really try to focus on keeping my arms up,” Langille said. “That’s one of things that puts me down on this race. I think keep my arms up and keep my drive going, I think that pushes me to keep going through my race.”
Bellefonte’s Madison Miller had a solid day in the javelin as she threw 112 feet, 8 inches to take third. She trailed only Altoona’s Annalyse Yost and Megan Kelley, who threw 133-1 and 115-11, respectively, for first and second.
“It’s fun. I didn’t get numbers I wanted to hit, but third place at a meet like this is still really good,” Miller said. “I think Annalyse (Yost) from Altona and Megan (Kelly) from Altoona , they’re both so good to compete with in a nice competition. Everyone else is also great competition too. It really pushes me.”
Like Helms, Miller also was happy to see her teammates in various events have success and come up big in events.

“I think we’re a really good team. This meet we always come to it and we all put a lot of effort into coming in here and doing best we can, putting best foot forward. Sometimes you may not hit the numbers you like to hit, but sometimes you PR,” Miller said. “I think everyone is doing really good. Our runners are good, Addi Fry is breaking her own records left and right. Top of my head I cant remember who else is breaking records, but I know a lot of the runners are doing really good.”
Fry would take fifth in the 800 in 2:17.20 and Natalie Jolley was a sixth-place finisher in the 3,200. Jolley ran a time of 11:50.68 as Williamsport’s Madeline Sanders took first in the 3,200 in 11:01.83.
Bellefonte’s girls 1,600 relay team also took fifth in 4:06.72.
Bellefonte’s Jonathan Gasper was a fifth-place finisher in the boys 1,600 in 4:34.19. He was behind only Luke Bradbury of State College (4:19.00), State College’s Kyle Fritzche (4:19.62), Mifflin County’s Aidan Scavitti (4:30.49) and Lewisburg’s Justin Nolt (4:30.51).
Jack Tyson of Bellefonte was a fifth-place finisher in the javelin with a throw of 158 feet, 10 inches. Shikellamy’s William Bender won by almost reaching 200 feet (196-7) and Shikellamy’s Brody Rebuck was second (190-0).

In the shot put, Bellefonte had another fifth-place finisher in Samuel Witmer. The Red Raider had a mark of 46-9 1/2, just seven inches behind fourth-place finisher Luke Solbakken of State College. State College’s CJ Clemons won with a meet-record throw of 57-2 1/4 and Loyalsock’s Jeremiah Johnson was second (53-3).
All in all, Friday was a nice meet for the Red Raiders and got them ready for tougher competition soon at the District 6 championships.
“We’re all putting the work in for sure, especially worth it to come to these meets where we’re actively against good competitors,” Miller said.
Penns Valley also saw success on Friday.
The Rams’ Spencer Althouse was a sixth-place finisher in the 100 with a time of 11.29, just 0.06 seconds behind fourth-place finisiher Landon Bassett of State College and fifth-place finisher Spencer Stine of Hughesville.
Also taking sixth on the boys side was Cael Smith, doing so in the shot put for Penns Valley. He had a throw of 45-3. Noah Patel of Penns Valley took seventh in the high jump with a height of 5-10.
The boys 3,200 relay team finished eighth in 8:57.20.
On the girls side, Breanne Porter was an eighth-place finisher in the javelin by throwing 104-7 and Miley Hubler took sixth in the high jump with a height of 5-0.
