Local roundup: Bucktail softball run-rules Benton behind 19-run barrage
After dropping their second game of the season, Bucktail softball needed just 24 hours to get back into the win column, posting a dominant 19-0 performance on the road at Benton. Eva Sockman went 4-for-4 and added 4 RBIs while Carrie Ditty and Kelsie Wagner held Benton to just one hit in a combined effort from the mound, with Ditty striking out six.
The win moves the Bucks to 5-2, and they will finally return home on Monday when they host Sugar Valley Rural Charter School. Benton is still looking for their first win as they fell to 0-3 and will be at Montgomery on Thursday.
In a down-to-the-wire pitcher’s duel, one run made the difference. Bellefonte’s Ella Herr bat home Adrienne Masullo for the game’s winning run in the top of the fourth, ensuring Abby Herr’s masterclass from the mound didn’t end in vain, as the Red Raiders beat Huntingdon, 1-0.
Herr pitched a two-hit gem, never allowing a run or walk while striking out five in another standout performance. On the other side, Huntingdon’s Alivia Nicklow was just as potent, scattering five hits, issuing just one walk and punching out eight. Offensively, Masullo accounted for two of those hits.
With the win, Bellefonte got back to .500 on the season, improving to 4-4. It’ll look to carry it forward against Philipsburg-Osceola on Thursday.
In boys tennis, Ryder Fink pulled off a clean sweep against Milton’s Hagen Hanselman at Singles Court 1, headlining a strong 5-0 win for Jersey Shore in which it didn’t drop a single set.
Ezra Paulhamus and Saul Hensler saw similar success in singles, winning 6-1, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-2 respectively. And in doubles, Abram Paulhamus and Luke Sarge cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory, with Dylan Hensler and Dillon Haranyi only dropping an additional game at Doubles Court 2.
Sophomores Sadie Stahl – a South Williamsport graduate – and Yeanneth Rosado both took victories in singles play for the Lycoming College women’s tennis team, which fell 5-2 to Goucher College in Landmark Conference action on Wednesday at Brandon Park.
Lycoming (2-12, 0-7 Landmark) earned their victories when Stahl defeated Goucher’s Meline Siggen 6-3 and 7-5 at No. 2 singles and Rosado gutted out a 7-5, 3-6 (10-5) victory over Kendra Lanese at No. 5 singles. The Warriors will be back in action on Saturday for a home Landmark Conference match against Drew University at 1 p.m.
The Lycoming College men’s tennis team fell, 7-0, in a Landmark Conference matchup against Goucher College on Wednesday at Brandon Park. Goucher moves to 8-6 on the year and 4-2 in the Landmark, while Lycoming fell to 3-9 overall and 0-7 in conference play. The Warriors will be back in action on Thursday for a non-conference matchup against Penn State-Altoona at 4:30 p.m.
