Local roundup: Late surge helps Bellefonte softball stifle PV rally, end skid

By From staff reports 4 min read

With a run allowed at the top of the fifth, Bellefonte softball seemed to surrender momentum as Penns Valley cut its lead was cut in half. However, rather than let the rally materialize, it instead responded immediately, scoring pairs of runs in the fifth and sixth to close out a 6-1 win.

Abby Herr took an 19-strikeout performance over the weekend and carried that success into Monday, striking out ten while allowing just three hits and two walks. Offensively, the Red Raiders were led by Ella Herr and Adrienne Masullo, who combined for five hits and three runs while each generating an extra-base hit.

For Penns Valley, Lilyana Treweek bat Taylor Homan home for the team’s lone run, and Lilly Gephart helped the Rams stay in it from the mound. Gephart finished with five strikeouts and pitched three scoreless innings.

The Rams return to action on Friday, as they host Westmont Hilltop at 4:30 p.m. Bellefonte hosts Bishop Carroll on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

Lynna Clark joined an impressive club Monday, going 3 for 4 and collecting her 100th career hit while helping Jersey Shore softball rout Danville, 19-3 in five innings. Clark, a four-year starter, doubled, drove in four runs and scored twice.

She joined teammate Dani Miller in the 100-hit group and Miller was 4 for 4 with a double, four runs and two RBIs. Lexi Frey earned the win, striking out five and also hit an RBI double as Jersey Shore (8-3, 4-1) stayed within one game of first place in the HAC-I. Maddie Thomas added a hit and three runs.

In baseball, Nolen Pauling and Carter Rhinehart both produced three hits but Shikellamy scored five fourth inning runs and defeated Jersey Shore, 5-3. Rhinehart doubled and drove in two runs, while he and Pauling both scored runs.

Hunter Enders went 2 for 4 with an RBI double and Tucker Hanna was 1 for 1. Pauling and Hayden Kelley combined on a three-hitter but Shikellamy took advantage of four errors and scored four unearned runs.

In boys tennis, Jersey Shore secured a 5-0 win at home against Williamsport on Monday afternoon to hand Williamsport its eighth loss of the year.

Ryder Fink and Ezra Paulhamus both posted 6-0, 6-0 wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively. Fink beat Howard Chen, 6-0, 6-0 and Paulhamus beat Spencer Kaar, 6-0, 6-0. At No. 3 singles, Jersey Shore's Saul Hensler earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Joseph Hillman.

In doubles action, Abram Paulhamus and Luke Sarge teamed to beat Wyatt Judge and Charles Plummer, 6-1, 6-2 and at No. 2 doubles, Dillon Harsanyi and Dylan Hensler beat Brayden Swanson and Cooper Gilbert, 6-1, 6-1.

Chen and Kaar travel to the District 6 singles tournament in Altoona on Tuesday and Williamsport's next team match is scheduled for Thursday at home against Central Mountain as senior Wyatt Judge will be honored.
