BELLEFONTE — Turing to keep the streak alive, the Bellefonte baseball team looked to keep their undefeated streak alive after posting six consecutive wins to start the season. In their way was the Tyrone Golden Eagles team who was searching for their third win of the year after starting 2-4.

Make it seven.

Monday thanks to home runs by Evan Mattern and teammate Quentin Crouthamel the Red Raiders started their week with a 6-0 blanking of Tyrone in front of their home fans.

Starting on the mound for the Red Raiders was hurler and lead off hitter Zach Lehman.

“When Zach’s pitching, you know, we’re throwing. He throws a lot of strikes for us, and there’s some confidence that comes with having Zach on the mound from the defensive standpoint,” said Bellefonte coach Jon Clark. “But you know, Tyrone’s a scrappy team and they’re putting bat on ball and making Zach and our defense work, and I think our defense made some big plays on some tough balls that were hit. We were able to take advantage of some smart defensive decisions on our guys on top balls.

“So that’s what we want. Need a little more offense moving forward,” Clark continued. “Not gonna win many games with four or five hits, but we’ll take advantage of any opportunity we’re given to score runs.”

In the first, Lehman gave up hits to Brayden Parsons and John Stroup but he was able to overcome the early hits by striking out three to keep the game scoreless going into the bottom of the inning.

Bellefonte got on the board in their part of the first.

With two outs, Evan Mattern blasted a solo shot to centerfield, making it a 1-0 contest. Defensively, things continued to click for the Red Raiders. After an opening inning walk, Lehman proceeded to strike out the next two batters and to cap off the inning Lehman caught Owen Oakes leaning from first and he picked him off.

The Red Raiders defense kept a Tyrone run from scoring in the third via getting John Stroup out in a rundown, keeping their lead at three.

Bellefonte’s patience at the plate wore down starter Carter Price. In the third, Mattern reached on a balk. Tyrone was held scoreless in the fourth as well, keeping their three-run advantage.

Going into the fifth, the Red Raiders still held the 3-0 lead. Tyrone threatened in the fifth with runners on first and third with two two outs. However, first baseman Quentin Crouthamel snagged a liner by John Stroup to end the inning.
