Bellefonte’s Schellenberg earns fourth D6 gold in pole vault, headlines area’s Day One success at districts

TIM WEIGHT/For the Express Belefonte's Victoria Schellenberg competes in the pole vault during a meet earlier this season. Schellenberg earned her fourth District 6 title on Tuesday.

ALTOONA – In this world, nothing can be said to be certain, except death, taxes and Victoria Schellenberg earning district gold.

On Tuesday, the Bellefonte senior completed the four-peat, earning her fourth District 6 title in the pole vault with a Class AAA state-qualifying mark of 11-6. She’ll head to states for the fourth time next Friday and push to close out her storied career on a high note.

Schellenberg was the lone Express area athlete to qualify for states through Day One of the District 6 Track and Field Championships on Tuesday at Altoona’s Mansion Park. However, multiple area athletes left their mark and took home hardware alongside her, and there’s much more to come on Wednesday.

Schellenberg was one of seven Red Raiders to earn a district medal on Tuesday, with the girls standing at No. 3 in the Class AAA team standings heading into Wednesday.

For the girls, junior Violet Peffer made it two Bellefonte athletes to earn a medal in the pole vault, hitting a mark of 9-0 to take fifth. Addison Fry placed fifth in the 1,600 with a 5:07.25, and Madison Miller took seventh in the shot put with a 31-0 1/4.

For the boys, Kaven Smith-Kirk and Calvin Lovrak each placed in the triple jump, Smith-Kirk hitting a mark of 42-1 1/2 to take sixth and Lovrak hitting a 40-11 1/4 to place eighth. Sam Witmer also placed seventh in the shot put, hitting a mark of 43-2 1/2.

In Class AA, Penns Valley secured a placement on both sides. Noah Patel finished the high jump at 6-1 to place fifth, and Miley Hubler finished the same event at 4-8 to finish in seventh.

For Central Mountain, placements evaded it on Day One, but it certainly came close on multiple occasions.

Freshmen Sofia Kelly and Zaylie Warren finished just outside the top eight in the triple jump, with Kelly hitting a 32-10 3/4 to place ninth and Warren finishing one slot behind her with a 32-7 1/2. Harper Conklin placed tenth in the pole vault with a 7-6, and Grace Keohane finished 13th in the 1,600 with a 5:36.40.

For Bald Eagle Area, junior Heidi Eveleth placed the highest, finishing 11th in the 1,600 with a 5:43.01.

With a considerable number of athletes qualifying for tomorrow’s finals, there’s plenty more to looked forward to. Day 2 action begins at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

Starting at $3.69/week.
