CM Week-In Review: T&F closes season; baseball, softball carry momentum into D6 playoffs
TIM WEIGHT/For the Express Central Mountain’s Josh Ludlow (27) pitches during a high school baseball game at Mifflin County last Tuesday. The Wildcats won 6-3.
Baseball with two tough wins, softball with two impressive offensive performances and track and field wrapped things up for the season. Those were the headlines for the week that was at Central Mountain. Let’s recap.
The track and field athletes were at Altoona on Tuesday and Wednesday, looking for District 6 gold. While none of the CM participants ultimately stood atop the podium at the end of their events, some still put forth very solid performances. Given that most are underclassmen, that is a sign of good things ahead for the track and field program at CM.
Top 10 finishes came from Sofia Kelly and Zaylie Warren (9th and 10th/Triple Jump), Harper Conklin (10th/Pole Vault), Wyatt Heeman and Shayden Hill (6th and 8th/400M Dash), Damien Winner (10th/3200M Run), Jacob Nyman and Jonathan Nyman (6th and 7th/110M Hurdles), Jacob Nyman (8th/300M Hurdles), Josiah Allert and Keron Yerger (2nd and 4th/High Jump), Brayden Stahl (7th/Long Jump), Ethan Shetler (7th/Javelin), Grace Keohane (6th/800M Run), Macia Owens and Sarah Hall (4th and 5th/100M Hurdles), Owens and Hall (6th and 7th/300MHurdles), and Sofia Kelly (4th/High Jump).
On the diamond, the Wildcat Baseball team earned an impressive come-from-behind win on Monday as they defeated a solid Hazleton team by a 6-5 score. CM trailed their guests 4-0 before they got things going, scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure the narrow victory.
Walks were an issue in helping both teams to score runs. However, it took some timely hitting as well. For CM, it was a couple of big hits from CM seniors Blake Walker, who was 3-for-3 on the day, as well as Watt Probst, who hit a double to drive in the winning runs for the Wildcats in the bottom of the 6th.
Pitching efforts in the win were handled by Aiden Jones and Austin Andrus, who combined to walk six batters but were able to limit the damage by holding the Hazleton offense to just four hits.
Mike Kramer’s squad took the field on back-to-back days as they were at Mifflin County on Tuesday to take on the Huskies. Dane Hanna and Josh Ludlow combined to hold the Huskies to just three runs on seven hits as the Wildcat offense found a way to score six runs, getting hits from Probst (two), Walker (double), singles from five other hitters and three walks from Hayes Miller.
The softball team was in Jersey Shore on Tuesday, looking to deliver a payback from a loss earlier in the season to the Bulldogs. Mission accomplished.
Camdyn Weaver went 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles and a triple while driving in five runs and hurling a complete game to lead the Lady Wildcats to a commanding 10-2 win over their rivals. The CM hitters collected 12 hits overall, with Aubrey Eiler going 5-for-5 and Elise McKean wrapping out a single and double. The CM offensive effort was also aided by six Shore miscues in the field.
The offense remained blazing hot as the Lady Wildcats captured a 9-4 road win at Selinsgrove on Thursday. Camdyn Weaver continued her tear at the plate as she went 3-for-3 including two home runs and drove in seven to lead the CM attack which pounded out 14 hits overall.
The Aubreys, Miller and Eiler, had three hits apiece while Cirstyn Watson had two. Miller and Weaver shared pitching duties for CM. With the win, CM finished the regular season at 12-4.
TEAM OF THE WEEK
The baseball team edges out softball this week on its strength of schedule. Their two wins came over two quality opponents. That is not to say that the softball team is not worthy, as they’ve kicked it into high gear as of late and have been destroying their opponents.
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
It would be very easy to go with Camdyn Weaver again, who had another outstanding week. Surely, she’s worthy. Being that she was last week’s winner, however, I’m going to give her an honorable mention this week and go with a baseball player that has been as steady, and clutch as can be for the Wildcats throughout the season. That individual is none other than Watt Probst. Another athlete with a very good week was Aubrey Eiler, who collected eight hits in her two games this week, earning herself an honorable mention as well.
FORMER WILDCATS ON CAMPUS
Speaking of Watt Probst, his oldest brother and former CM standout Cy is listed on the roster as an assistant coach for a Frostburg State team for which he previously played. Former Lady Wildcat, Harley Kunes went 2-for-3 and scored a run in Penn College’s 3-2 loss in the United East Championship Game.
Audrey Walker and Haleigh Peters, former Wildcats, saw their current team, Penn State Altoona lose their conference final 8-7 to Penn State Behrend. And Cooper Bottorf and Jonathan Hughes, both freshmen at Susquehanna University, were throwers this season for the very successful River Hawks program.
LOOKING AHEAD
The softball team travels to Bald Eagle Area on Wednesday to take on Mifflin County for the PIAA District 6 Class 5A crown. CM has defeated Mifflin County twice already this season, so they will be heavily favored. However, anything can happen in the playoffs, so the Cats will need to bring their collective A-games to Wingate in order to avoid a letdown and bring home the hardware.
The baseball team is off this week as they prepare for the District 6 Class 5A title game next week. Layoffs are often not good at this time of the season, so head coach Mike Kramer will surely be reaching into his bag of tricks to find ways to keep his troops well-tuned and ready for championship play against the winner of this week’s game between Shikellamy and Hollidaysburg.
This is the final week in review for the spring sports season. However, once the season has concluded for all teams, there will be a season recap featuring a rundown on all teams that will include the announcement for the team and athlete of the spring. Thanks for following along this spring. Go Wildcats!
