Dietz wins Keith Kauffman Classic at Port Royal
Saturday night at Port Royal was the 11th annual running of the Keith Kauffman Classic. The event honors the track’s all-time winningest 410 sprint car driver and Chase Dietz would lead all 30 laps around the Speed Palace for the $16,000 pay day.
Dietz would start alongside Kasey Kahne, who is piloting the Macri Motorsports while Anthony Macri recovers from a back injury, for the A-main event.
Kahne — who is fresh off of his first World of Outlaws win at Williams Grove — would run in the second spot over the opening 12 laps before high limit racing points leader and the defending Weikert Memorial winner; Aaron Reutzel would overtake him for the runner up spot.
Over the remaining 23 laps, Dietz would be too strong around the outside of the speedway to be caught.
“Pulling off these wins is so difficult to do, especially at Port Royal,” said Dietz in victory lane. “That’s the best I’ve felt here. Awesome team we have here, and we’re really looking forward to next week.”
Ryan Smith would earn the hard charger award worth $500 and Freddie Rahmer would have the 17 pill drawn in victory lane earning him the J&S Classics Warrior Award worth $1,000. The 410 sprint cars will be back in competition on Friday through the 24th with high limit racing for the Bob Weikert Memorial.
In Empire Super Sprint Competition, Alex Therrien would take the win from his fourth place starting spot.
At the Clinton County Speedway, Zach Rhodes of McVeytown became the third different winner in the RaceSaver sprint cars. It was the third of his career at the one-third mile oval. AY Schilling of Linden won the pro stocks, Mason McAndrew won the 270 micros, AJ Hoffner won the four cylinders and Adilyn Bathurts won the junior sprints.
At Hidden Valley Speedway, Colton Friese made the tow to Hidden Valley Speedway to pick up his first-ever win at the Ultimate Bull Ring in the Legends Special. Other winners as the first points race made it into the books included Craig Bainey in the semi lates, Fuzzy Fields in the Penn Ohio pro stocks, Jimmy Holden in the small block modifieds, George Bailey in the pro stocks and Brett Hanley in the four cylinders.
This Friday night is the annual Shawn “Sheetz” McGarvey Memorial race for the super late models. McGarvey was a top late model driver who lost his life in a work-related accident in 2009. The super late models will go 30-laps for $3,000 to win and $300 to start. There will also be a late model King of the Hill and a full program for the regular divisions.
