LEWISTOWN – You can never count out an opponent in baseball or softball. Time isn’t a factor, and one spark is often all it takes to ignite a rally.
Bellefonte softball experienced that reality first-hand in Thursday’s District 6 Class AAAA championship game against Juniata (2-15). Despite holding a five-run lead through sixth amidst a defensive masterclass, the Red Raiders saw tension rise three outs away from glory.
The Indians loaded the bases with one out on the board and got two runs out of it through the next two at-bats. However, just when it seemed like the tide had effectively turned, Bellefonte (10-10) shut it down.
Back-to-back outs, one tenser than the last, cut Juniata’s rally three runs short of an extension with the tying run on first. Bellefonte’s Abby Herr tied her career high in strikeouts at 19, and the offense exploded for four runs in the fifth to bolster their cushion, as the Red Raiders defended their district title with a 5-2 win.
There were certainly nerves down the stretch, from the players to head coach Erica DeVinney. But Bellefonte found a way to set those nerves aside enough to add another district crown to their ever-expansive catalog.

“Just finishing the game, staying within myself and realizing that I can only do what I can do,” said Herr on her mindset throughout that seventh. “Our team played well, and we battled through theirs.”
“It’s definitely something that is good to have happen now and prepares us for states later on. Situations like this help us grow and build upon what we already have,” said DeVinney. “They didn’t give up, and we’ve been working really hard all season long for this game and more, so they really proved today that we can battle through.”
It took time for Bellefonte to establish their offense. Through the first four innings, Herr and Juniata starting pitcher Destiney Yohn went toe-to-toe in what was shaping up to be a classic pitching duel. Within that span, they combined for 18 strikeouts, and Juniata retired the side twice.
However, the cracks would arise in the fourth. A leadoff single from Riley Santostefano steadily transitioned into an opportunity. Santostefano would steal second and third before a fielding error at third allowed her to score her first of two runs, ending the 0-0 tie and giving the Red Raiders’ offensive momentum.
And they’d make the most of that momentum in the fifth.

A leadoff error would get Bellefonte’s Lydia Osman on base. Then, Sloan Moore belted a fly ball to the left center wall. Not only would that hit bat Osman home, it was also enough for the junior to reach home herself for an inside-the-park home run.
“When I was around second, I saw my coach waving me down, so I just got excited and got all that energy up,” said Moore on the moment. “I wasn’t hitting too great in the beginning, but I just talked to my coaches and was able to get a hit.”
“It was really high. Then, everyone else started hitting,” she added on the energy in the dugout following the homer.
From there, Santostefano fought for a walk, and Adrienne Masullo and Peyton Rimmey followed her up with base hits. Rimmey’s liner to right center proved to be a big one, resulting in a double that got Santostefano and Masullo home and upping Bellefonte’s lead to 5-0 after five.
Defensively, Herr’s strikeout success kicked off an out into the first and never truly slowed down, even as Juniata ignited a spark late.

Of Bellefonte’s 21 outs, 18 were Herr strikeouts and 17 occurred in sequence, with the 19th not featuring an out due to an error on a dropped third strike in the first. She held a no-hitter heading into the seventh before the Indians logged two hits to close and only allowed four walks – never more than one in an inning.
“Abby has worked really hard,” said DeVinney on her pitch. “She’d done a really nice job, and I think games like this show how hard she works and how dedicated she is to the sport and to the team.”
Even in defeat, Juniata outclassed its 2-14 record by multiple octaves, giving a program that’s dominated District 6 Class 4A for multiple seasons a good scare by the time it was all said and done. Despite their record, DeVinney anticipated a slugfest to open postseason play, and they got it on Thursday at Mifflin County’s First Quality Field.
“We played them last year for the district championship, and they battled till the end, so we knew what we were getting into,” said DeVinney on Juniata. “They have a great team. Craig (Bubb) is a great coach, and we knew that they wouldn’t give up until the very end.”
With that out of the way, the focus shifts to what lies ahead. They’ll face the to-be-determined District 8 Class 4A champion in a PIAA sub-regional next Tuesday, with the winner getting a ticket to the PIAA Class 4A Championships.

“I think we’ve built ourselves up really well,” said Herr. “We started out rough, but we’ve just gotten a lot better throughout the season. I just hope we continue to stay composed and within ourselves.”
