Kahne claims first World of Outlaws win
It was another challenging race weekend with rainouts at Clinton County and Selinsgrove. The Outlaw swing through our area continued at Williams Grove and the Friday night preliminary race it was a Posse win as Kasey Kahne claimed his first ever World of Outlaws victory by winning it in the Macri Motorsports 39m.
The 30-lap Outlaw finale was claimed by their point leader David Gravel and now the Morgan Cup trophy will reside at the World of Outlaws headquarters in Concord, North Carolina for the next 364 days.
The victory for Connecticut’s Gravel was the 10th of his career at the speedway, worth a total of $20,000 for a flag to flag victory.
Justin Whittall started fourth in the field and raced to third behind Friday winner Kasey Kahne and leader Gravel for the first 18 laps of the event before Kahne started fading while Whittall’s car got faster. Kahne hopped over the Turn 4 cushion letting Whittall move into second place and he began challenging Gravels advantage. Gravel had a 1.5-second lead over Whittall and with three to go his lead had shrunk to .750 seconds at the hands of Whittall, however time ran out for him to attempt a pass as he instead crossed the finish line just .542 seconds behind the winner while surging toward him.
Down at BAPS Motor Speedway the FK Rod Ends “Start Them All” features delivered another exciting night of racing on Saturday. The Super Sportsman feature saw John Edkin jump out front early and control the opening 11 laps as he worked through traffic and held off a strong field behind him. Fans were treated to a competitive battle throughout the event as multiple drivers searched for speed around the speedway.
The Legend Car feature produced an exciting battle throughout the field as drivers raced side-by-side for position on Saturday night at BAPS Motor Speedway. Eighth-starting Jeremy Ott steadily worked his way toward the front before taking control of the race on lap 12. Once Ott grabbed the lead, he never looked back and drove away from the competition to score an impressive feature victory after charging through the talented field.
In the limited stock feature, Scott Palmer put together a dominant performance against a stout 27-car field. Palmer started on the pole position and led every lap from start to finish to claim another feature win.
The extreme stock division once again delivered one of the most competitive races of the night as Alex Updegraff and Evan Foust battled intensely for the top spot. The two drivers traded momentum throughout the feature before Updegraff was able to gain the advantage late in the race. Updegraff went on to capture the victory after an exciting duel with Foust, adding another memorable chapter to the growing rivalry within the division.
Coming up this week at Port Royal after being dark last weekend they return with the Keith Kauffman Classic. The night will feature the 410 sprint cars alongside the super sprint 360 sprint cars. This prestigious event will pay $16,000-to-win for the J&S Classics PA Posse 410 sprint car feature, while the empire super sprints will battle for a $4,000 top prize. The 410 sprint car A-main purse alone exceeds $47,000, setting the stage for a blockbuster night of racing.
The purse increased an extra $1,000 from it’s originally scheduled advertised weeks ago as they put an extra $500 on both the second- and third-place payouts in memory of co-owner Toby Capparelle, who passed away unexpectedly on March 10.
This also marks the first appearance of the empire super sprints at Port Royal Speedway. While fans can expect an exciting field of 410 sprint cars, a mix of regulars and new faces will also be turning laps around the half mile on Saturday night. While the on-track action will be a major attraction, the night will also serve as a celebration of legendary Port Royal Speedway driver Keith Kauffman and his unforgettable career at the Juniata County oval.
