HERSHEY – As Bellefonte baseball’s last hoorah commenced, it seemed like those gathered at Hershey’s Memorial Field on Thursday night were in for a classic finish. Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh, the Red Raiders logged back-to-back singles without an out on the board, placing the tying run on first and the winning run on the plate.
However, as quickly as that spark took shape, it vanished. Senior Carsen Henry’s apparent infield ball on the ensuing at-bat was called back, which would’ve loaded the bases with Bellefonte’s out meter still reading zero, and its two base runners remained in place as Archbishop Wood (18-4) secured the outs it needed to advance to state semis.
Though Henry and Zach Lehman combined for a strong outing from the mound, a three-run shot from the Vikings’ Chase Cavallaro in the fifth made the difference. The Red Raiders’ surging bats were held to just one run on five hits, as they fell in excruciating fashion, 3-1, to close their promising postseason in the PIAA Class 4A quarterfinals.
The loss certainly stung, and it was difficult for manager Jon Clark and his players to not ponder the ‘what ifs’ when it was all said and done. But the team put together a run Clark was considerably proud of, earning its first state win since 2023 on top of its eighth District 6 title in nine seasons.
“You get to this time of year, and everybody’s a good, quality team. You can play really well and still end up on the short side of things, and they made a couple more plays than we did,” said Clark. “It wasn’t that we made mistakes; they just made a couple plays. It didn’t work out, but we fought hard and played really, really well.”

“It meant a lot to the seniors and for the team,” said senior shortstop Cameron Lucas on the run as a whole. “It was rough in its areas, but definitely grateful for all the experiences.”
The game’s defining moment proved to be that aforementioned, fifth inning homer. Prior to the shot, Bellefonte (18-5) had posted four scoreless innings defensively, taking a 1-0 lead in the third and holding the momentum until that moment.
After seeing four batters in the first three innings and retiring Archbishop Wood’s side in the fourth, Henry saw his first trouble in the fifth. Jackson Kley reached first by the skin of his teeth on an infield grounder to Lucas, and Shane Broadwater followed him up with a walk.
With the Vikings’ lineup set to reset, the Bellefonte coaching staff decided it was a good time for a change, subbing Lehman in for Henry. Though Lehman’s last 34 pitches went through without a hitch, his first was the one Archbishop Wood took advantage of.
Cavallaro didn’t use it to gauge, swinging for the fences, making great contact under the ball and belting an absolute bomb to kingdom come over the right field wall. In response, Bellefonte’s well-travelled crowd went quiet, and Archbishop Wood’s was the loudest it’d be all afternoon.

“It was just one pitch that their kid got a hold of, and it was a great hit,” said Clark on the play. “But it doesn’t come down to one play. We had a couple other opportunities that couldn’t propelled us to a different outcome potentially.”
Having thrown 77 pitches on Monday, some might’ve questioned the move. But it was a scenario the Red Raiders had worked on throughout the season, and Clark stood by the decision following the game.
“Zach and all the pitchers had bought into that mentality. You’re not going to win all your games on one pitcher,” said Clark. “Carsen was throwing well. I just felt that at that moment, it was the right time to make a change, and I wouldn’t change anything about that.”
Apart from the homer and seventh inning, the third ‘what if’ came in the third inning.
Freshman Alten Howell jumpstarted Bellefonte’s strongest offensive surge of the afternoon, putting a one-out bunt in the perfect spot to secure his third bunt single of states. The lineup reset, and leadoff batter Braeden Fortney and Lehman followed him up with back-to-back singles, the latter which bat home Howell and put two runners on.

But like the seventh inning, the opportunity to generate more offense vanished in the blink of an eye. Archbishop Wood starting pitcher Andrew Unrath picked off Lehman to secure the second out. And though Evan Mattern fought for a walk to establish corners, Oliver Thornburg was struck out on the ensuing at-bat, and stranding Bellefonte’s two runners.
It’s a moment that only sticks out due to the end result and the Vikings’ stout defense. Outside of the third and seventh, and a second-inning error, Archbishop Wood was able to keep the Red Raiders off the bases for the remaining innings, posting four retirements and striking out nine batters.
“You can always play the ‘what ifs’ game, go back and look at any moment, and they could do the same thing,” said Clark. “Unfortunately, it’s one game, a one-and-you’re-done scenario each and every week. You’ve just got to be hot, and when you’re hot, you’ve got to capitalize on that momentum.”
On the positive end of things, Bellefonte’s defense put together a stellar performance.
Henry finished his lone states start allowing just two hits and two walks through 4 1/3 innings pitched, and Lehman bounced back swimmingly, never allowing another run while pulling off an impressive double play from the mound in the sixth. And the field complemented them well, finishing without an error on the board.

No loss feels good, certainly not at this level. But the team put together a tremendous effort to get to this point, dominating multiple strong opponents and battling another one to the brink of a Final Four bid. They concluded their 2026 campaign with their highest win total (18) since 2023’s state title run and finished as one of eight teams remaining in a stacked field.
“I’m super proud of our guys,” said Clark. “I told them, ‘Even though you’re not in the Final Four, you’re one of the four best teams in my eyes.’ I would take this team against any other opponent.”
Moving forward, the team parts ways with a considerable class, featuring six players that started this season in Cameron Lucas, Quentin Crouthamel, Oliver Thornburg, Carsen Henry, Isaac Gall and Jack McHail. But with a considerable junior class set to return in 2027, there’s certainly a chance for a runback.
