Nittany Valley defeats Mifflin County in elimination game to advance

BELLEFONTE – They meet again. On Wednesday, two teams very familiar with each other in Nittany Valley and Mifflin County met for the second time in this summer’s major softball district all-star tournament.
At stake? A trip to battle the currently undefeated State College squad that defeated Nittany Valley, 11-7, on Tuesday.
Both came into the contest with 2-1 records. In the end, the Nittany Valley crew took home the 6-1 victory in front of the home fans at Panik Stadium.
Nittany Valley sent Sydney Smith to the circle as she faced off against Mifflin County’s Riley Pully. Smith finished with 10 strikeouts and gave up three hits.
“Give a lot of credit to their pitcher, too. She battled us all game long. So she held us at bay until that last inning,” said Nittany Valley coach Ryan Tubbs on Pully. “Sid came locked in today. I mean, she was dialed in from the start. She was hitting her spots and, you know, you can’t ask her much more.”

Mifflin County got a quick start in the first, posting a run. Callie Kuhns singled back up the middle. She moved up to second on a wild pitch.Rose Miller moved her up as she hustled out a bunt, moving Kuhns to third. She later scored on an RBI fielder’s choice by Kenley Powell.
But the Nittany Valley crew battled back to plate a run.
With one out, Sydney Smith helped her own cause as she roped a triple to the right centerfield gap. Mackenzie Kellogg scored Smith as she blasted a sacrifice fly into the outfield, scoring Smith and tying the contest going into the second.
Smith struck out two of the three batters she faced in the second.
Mifflin County returned the favor, allowing just one runner on base before sending Nittany Valley down scoreless in the inning. Smith again struck out 2 of 3 in the third to keep Mifflin County at bay.

After two consecutive singles by Nittany Valley’s Smith and Kellogg, Mifflin County held tough keeping the game tied as the contest moved into the fourth. Nittany Valley punched in its second run in the fourth inning.
Trinity King took one for the team as she was hit by a pitch. She stole second, putting herself in scoring position.
Alayna Heverly took a pitch into right, scoring King on the play, giving her team the 2-1 lead going into the fifth inning.
Smith continued to add to her strike out total picking up strikeouts No. 7, 8 and 9 to send MIfflin County to their last three outs, trailing.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Nittany Valley bats came alive posting four more insurance runs to take a 6-1 into the final stanza.

Despite a gutsy effort by Mifflin County, the Nittany squad was too much on the night falling by five runs.
Nittany Valley will meet State College again while Mifflin County finished with a record of 2-2, scoring a total of 39 runs in their four games.
