Nittany Valley major softball roars past Mifflin County behind ten-run second

LEWISTOWN – One big inning!
Wednesday, the second season got underway for the local Little League All-Star softball playoffs got underway. The Nittany Valley major softball team traveled to Lewistown to battle with Mifflin County in both team’s series opener.
After a close first inning, the crew from Nittany Valley broke the game open on a 10-run second. From there, their defense held as they went onto take the contest 12-2 in four innings.
Picking up the win for Nittany Valley was Riley Solt. Solt went the distance, striking out nine, scattered four hits and allowed only two runs.
Picking up hits for Mifflin County were Rylee Pully (two triples), Callie Kuhns and Maelee Heimbaugh.

It took just two batters in the first to start the scoring for Nittany Valley.
Grayson Bair led off with a single into left field. She moved up to second on a miscue by Mifflin County. Both later scored on a wild pitch, taking a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the first.
Back battled Mifflin County in their part of the inning. With one out, Rose Miller reached on a walk. He stayed was brief as Pully blasted a triple into left, scoring Miller.
Nittany Valley’s offense zeroed in in the second inning, posting 10 runs on 10 hits.
Mifflin County quickly got two outs before King kept the inning alive with a single into left field to jump start the surge. Laura Roan finished with a single of her own, putting runners on the corners.

Mackenzie Kellogg singled in King with a smash to right field. Leadoff hitter Bair followed with a two-RBI single to right center to up the Nittany Valley lead to 5-1.
Sydney Smith continued the hitting spree as she notched an RBI single. Kenzie Weber kept it going with an RBI single to right. Solt helped her own cause with another single.
Avelyn Henry walked to set the stage for Trinity King, who hustled out an infield single. Alayna Heverly kept the rally alive with another infield hit. And rounding out the hits was Morgan Campbell-Tubbs, as she posted a two-RBI hit to end the scoring.
When the dust settled, Nittany Valley went ahead 12-1.
Mifflin County refused to go down without a fight as they held the Nittany Valley offense at bay. It hit the ball hard but could not get any runs across in the first three innings, but they were able to plate a run in the fourth.

Pully led the way with her second triple and scored on an RBI fielder’s choice from Kenley Powell.
With the win, the Nittany Valley squad moves to a contest on Friday against State College who defeated Clearfield. Mifflin County will battle Clearfield on Friday.
