Nittany Valley minor softball team falls in elimination game to Mifflin County in districts

STRODES MILLS — Monday, the Nittany Valley minor softball all-stars traveled to Mifflin County in an elimination game in the District 5 tournament as both had one loss coming into the contest. It was a game of momentum shifts throughout the high scoring affair.

Mifflin County came out strong early building up a 10-0 advantage and was able to fend off the never-say-die Nittany Valley squad en route to their 17-8 victory.

Leading the offensive punch for the Mifflin County crew was Katie Anewalt as she went a perfect 4 for 4 night. She scored twice and racked up three RBIs. Nittany Valley’s Kinsley Cunningham tallied her teams only two hits to lead her team.

Picking up the win for Mifflin County was Maria Soccio. Soccio allowed one lone hit and struck out nine in her 4 1/3 innings of work. Lexi Anewalt came in to help protect the team’s lead and was strong in her time pitching.

In the first MIfflin County opened up taking a 2-0 advantage.

Katie Anewalt got her night started with a blooping single into centerfield. Soccio helped her own cause as she singled in Anewalt with a single into right. She later would score on a wild pitch.

Soccio cruised through the first inning, taking Nittany Valley down 1-2-3.

Mara Clark got things started back up for Mifflin County in the second. She singled to third. She stole second and scored on a single by Addison Michalchik. Michalchik made her way around the bases and found herself on third.

She tried to score on a wild pitch but she was thrown out by catcher Cunningham who got the ball quickly back to Peyton Solt where she put the tag on a sliding Michalchik.

Brin Rupert restarted the charge as she walked. She stole second and then was joined on base by Delilah Quinlan and Lylah Umbenhour, loading the bases.

All moved up a base on a wild pitch, scoring Rupert.

The run would bring up lead off hitter Katie Anewalt to the plate. Anewalt did not disappoint as she blasted a double that scored two RBIs. Soccio added to the scorebook as she hustled out an infield hit, scoring Anewalt.

When the dust settled, Mifflin County upped its lead to 7-0.

Soccio sent down the side in order for the second time in as many innings. Mifflin County added to its lead in third adding three more runs to put the visiting team up 10-0.

However, Nittany Valley refused to go down without a fight as they rallied back in the third with four runs of their own.

Nittany Valley showed much patience at the plate as they rallied for four runs to cut it to a 6-run Mifflin County lead. Scoring in the inning were Nora Lucas, Willow Stitzer, Kenslee Holderman and Nora Snyder.

Mifflin County added a run in the fourth to go up by seven. But Nittany Valley continued to chip at the Mifflin County lead adding three more runs via walks, making it an 11-7 contest.

Mifflin County was able to stretch out its lead, outscoring Nittany Valley in the final two innings by a 6-1 margin to capture a hard fought victory.

With the win, Mifflin County continues its trek through the minor tournament while Nittany Valley ended its season with a 2-2 record.
