Local roundup: Shore, CM girls tennis open seasons with tough losses

On Monday afternoon, the Jersey Shore girls tennis team opened its 2026 with a home matchup against Heartland-I foe Williamsport. The team showed promise in its opener, coming close to scoring two points. But the Millionaires had an answer, sweeping doubles and earning two singles win to defeat the Bulldogs, 4-1.
Emily Shemory picked up Jersey Shore's lone point on the day with a tight, three-set win over Williamsport's Gabbie McQuillen at Singles Court 2. There, she won a tight first set, 6-4, and bounced back swimmingly from a second-set defeat, sweeping the third set, 6-0, to get the Bulldogs on the board.
Apart from Shemory, Shore's No. 2 duo Scarlett Hensler and Alainia Samar also forced a third set. After winning the first set 6-4, Williamsport's Kylie Bango and Morgam Zeshan responded with a set victory of their own. Then, the Millionaire duo went on to edge out Hensler and Samar, 7-4, in a third-set tiebreaker to earn Williamsport its fourth point.
The Bulldogs (0-1) return to action on Wednesday, as they look to bounce back in another Heartland-I affair against Shikellamy. That match is set for 4 p.m. at the Jersey Shore Tennis Courts.
The Central Mountain girls tennis team opened its 2026 season with a road test against District 4 power Danville. Against one of the best teams in the district and Heartland-I conference, the Wildcats endured a tough loss, falling to the Ironmen by 5-0 sweep.
Though Central Mountain was unable to take a set throughout the match, a few of its players kept things interesting.
Both doubles duos - Kylee Markle and Tess Akeley on Doubles Court 1 and Erin Thompson and Erin Packer on Court 2 - earned three points in a set and five combined. In singles, sophomore Lane Walker took five games against Danville's Alexa Preisz, falling 6-2, 6-3. And fellow sophomore Lucy Walker took a game off District 4 title candidate Josie Bendle.
Central Mountain (1-0) returns to action with another road test against Heartland-I foe Selinsgrove, the second part in a five-match road stint. That match is set for 4 p.m. at the Selinsgrove Area High School Tennis Courts.
