Bellefonte girls soccer scores 15 goals in win over Penns Valley

By KENNY VARNER 4 min read

SPRING MILLS – Bellefonte took to the road Monday to start off the week with a Laurel Highlands girls soccer match up. Playing against a feisty, smaller team in the Rams of Penns Valley, the Raider offense exploded for eight first half goals as they went on to the 15-0 Victory.

"I thought we actually came out a little bit slow at the beginning of the first half, and then, towards the second half of the first half, we started to pick it up a little bit," said Bellefonte coach Stacey Miller. "Kudos to the Penns Valley girls because they only have 11 that they’re putting out there on the field, and a lot tenacity and hard work going on out there, so I give them all the credit for doing that."

Bellefonte led things off pushing the ball right into the Penns Valley side of the field. For the first 25 minutes, the Penns Valley backfield led by goalie Olivia Smeltzer held its own.

"I was very impressed with how they started that game. I think they did end up just getting tired out. We’ve only got 11 this year, so the games are catching up to them and just playing a full 80 minutes without breaks is tough," said Penns Valley coach Sean Herrmann. "But they did. They started the game really well. They held their own.”

Bellefonte struck first at 35:58, as Nora Davis blasted a shot and sailed it through. The Rams were tested often but were able to keep the Raiders off the board for almost 10 minutes following that goal.

"Our goalkeeper, Olivia, she plays with a lot of heart every single game. It’s her first year playing soccer," said Herman . "I don’t know what she had, like 30 saves tonight or something close to 30 saves, which is incredible. And the back line supports her every day. working hard."

But Reese Patterson ended that stretch of not scoring, pushing the second Bellefonte goal through at 25:33.

Then, the Raiders started to get warmed up.

Davis's second unassisted goal put her team up 3-0 at 22:53. And minutes later, teammate Claire Halterman notched a goal of her own with 17:13 left in the half.

Before the Rams were able to settle back in, Davis hit another blast at 16:49 to secure a hat trick. Reese Patterson kept the scoring going as she caught a pass from Autumn Naspinski and sent it home at 4:44.

The goals kept coming for the Lady Raiders as Elizabeth Brezler scored less than a minute later at 3:52. Autumn Naspinski posted the eighth goal for Bellefonte on an unassisted smash at 2:31. And rounding out the first half scoring for the Raiders was Kaylee Knepp, with an unassisted goal at 1:44.

Going into the second half, Miller was able to go to her bench to give some of her reserves some valuable playing time.

"It’s definitely important. We only have like four JV games on the season total," said Miller when asked about the importance of getting her subs some valuable playing time at this point in the season. “So, anytime we can get our girls off the bench is a win for us.”

In the second, the Red Raiders got goals from Eva Shvenke, Emily Culley, Piper Breon, Brezler, Trinity Semack and Juniper Ondrasik. Culley and Cayley Zimmerman recorded assists within that stretch.

Bellefonte battles Johnstown Tuesday while Penns Valley hosts Bishop Carroll.
