Bald Eagle Area moved to 4-2-1 in girls soccer thanks to a convincing 5-1 win against Moshannon Valley on Saturday afternoon.
Maddy Jones scored off an Abby Hacker assist 5:55 into the game. Just 40 seconds later, Moshannon Valley tied it up. But from there, Bald Eagle Area got refocused and scored four unanswered goals in the second half. Emma Collins, Addie Tice, Savanna Albright and Kendall Smith all scored in the second half -- all four goals coming within a seven-minute span -- and Tice had two assists.
Bald Eagle Area out-shot Moshannon Valley, 20-7.
"We got off to a bit of a slow start in the first half. We did get a good long-range goal from Maddy Jones, but conceded too easily afterwards. In the second half, you could see the switch flip for them and all of a sudden, they started connecting passes and moving the ball down the field," Bald Eagle Area coach Jared Moore said. "They put four more goals in the back of the net. Emma Collins had a great finish from a corner kick and Addie Tice put a nice cross in front of the goal for Savanna Albright to finish were the highlights.
"On defense, Kendall Smith had herself a game. She was lights out on defense and marked one of their best forwards," Moore continued. "She shut her down all game. It was an outstanding effort. She even finished off the scoring by finding the net herself off of a corner kick. It was an overall great team win."
Cami Walker had six saves for Bald Eagle Area.
• Gabe Cuneo scored off a penalty kick and Mason Brill put in a goal off a free kick to give Wellsboro a 2-0 win over Jersey Shore in boys soccer. The Green Hornets out-shot the Bulldogs, 11-6. Kayden Rogers had six saves for the Green Hornets and Aiden Lape had nine for Jersey Shore.
• Lock Haven fell to Gannon, 3-0, in PSAC Western Division action. Gannon scored once in the first half and added two goals early in the second half to secure the conference victory over Lock Haven
Lock Haven generated three first-half shots, including shots on goal by Lily O'Brien and Colleen Lloyd, but Gannon made both saves to preserve the 1-0 halftime lead. Gannon extended its advantage to 3-0 with goals in the 53rd and 55th minute.
• Lock Haven’s men’s soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-0 road victory over the University of the District of Columbia. The win marked Lock Haven's (2-2-4) first victory of the season and extended its unbeaten run to three matches.
Billy Lawrence scored the lone goal of the match in the 70th minute, while Reece Kordes made one save to secure the clean sheet for the Bald Eagles.
After a scoreless first half, Lock Haven broke through in the 70th minute. Austen Veach and Nicholas McGhin connected on the buildup before finding Lawrence, who finished the opportunity at the 69:40 mark to give Lock Haven the 1-0 advantage.
• In women’s volleyball, Lock Haven won its third straight match with a dominant sweep of Lackawanna on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Falcons 25-9, 25-4, 25-11 inside Thomas Field House. The Bald Eagles improved to 8-4 overall with the victory, while Lackawanna fell to 0-6. The Bald Eagles have won seven of their last eight games and are riding a three-match winning streak.
Lock Haven controlled the match from the opening serve, never trailing and recording no ties or lead changes across the three-set contest. The Bald Eagles hit .362 as a team, totaling 33 kills against just eight attack errors on 69 attempts.
The Bald Eagles posted 10 kills in the opening set and earned the 25-9 decision. Lock Haven was nearly flawless offensively in the second frame, hitting .560 with 14 kills and no errors en route to a 25-4 victory. The Bald Eagles completed the sweep with a 25-11 win in the third set.
• In women’s tennis, Penn College defeated Lock Haven, 4-3. The Wildcats won four of six singles matches, taking Nos. 1 through 4, while Lock Haven University won two of three doubles matches. This victory marked the first time Penn College has defeated Lock Haven since the 2019-20 season. The Wildcats are 1-1 overall. Lock Haven fell to 0-2 overall.
The Wildcats split the first two completed doubles courts before Lock Haven University secured the doubles point. Emma McLaughlin and Faith Murray defeated Alyse Bass and Breanna Chicas 6-2 at No. 2 doubles, but Maci Rohrbach and Alaina Marchioni answered with a 6-4 win over Leah Vest and Kiera Wene at No. 1. Emma Ackley and Hope Lapinski then defeated Alex McDougal and Arista Fine 7-5 at No. 3 to clinch the point for Lock Haven University.
Starting singles down 1-0, the Wildcats fell behind 2-0 when Lapinski defeated Fine 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. Murray put the Wildcats on the board with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Chicas at No. 4, before Ackley defeated McDougal 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 to give Lock Haven University a 3-1 lead.
