SPRING MILLS - Despite a strong first half on defense last Friday, Penns Valley's first Centre County battle of the 2026 season still ended with a list of shortcomings. Not only did it fall to 0-3 behind a 24-point loss, but it also saw starting quarterback Cael Smith leave the game injured in the process.
Heading into Week Four, the hope is for more positives as it prepares for another Centre County foe in Philipsburg-Osceola (2-1). The Rams are set to host the Mounties for their homecoming game on Friday and will look to add a bounce-back win to the night's festivities.
After drawing a Bald Eagle squad that's been on a tear to start the season, the road doesn't get much easier in Week Four. Philipsburg-Osceola is fresh off two 20-point victories over Chestnut Ridge and Clearfield, wins which saw it amass a combined 82 points behind an imposing run game.
Junior running back Damarcus Law headlines a rushing attack that's averaged almost 260 yards per game and scored 12 touchdowns through three games.
Law heads into Week 4 with half those scores and over 400 yards of total offense, averaging almost nine yards per carry. And Aaron Davis and Mason Vaughn have operated well in change-of-pace roles, amassing 277 yards and four touchdowns while each averaging over five yards per carry.
Passing wise, the Mounties aren't as efficient, with Archer Baughman completing 46 percent of his passes and throwing four picks to one touchdown. But were they to look to the air, they'd probably look towards senior Connor Guenot, who has 86 yards on five receptions.
Defensively, Philipsburg-Osceola has had its ups and downs. It gave up 43 points in its opening loss at Central, and that average still sits above 28 points per game. But after giving up 14 first-quarter points last Friday, it outpaced Clearfield 48-14 for the rest of the game.
For Penns Valley, the main question lies at quarterback. Prior to his injury, Smith was establishing himself under center and making an impact with his dual-threat ability. He surpassed 100 passing yards and 85 rushing yards in his two full games and amassed five combined touchdowns.
Against the Eagles, Isaac Harpster stepped into his place and did what he could, completing four of his nine passes for 36 yards and rushing for 13 yards. If Smith is out, he'll be expected to take on the role again, this time with a full week of first-team reps to build on.
Other standouts that could help deal with that injury include Tripp Watson, who rushed for 47 yards against Bald Eagle in Week 3 and has surpassed 120 yards total. Spencer Althouse has eight receptions and two touchdowns, including a 75-yarder against Bishop Guilfoyle, and Christian Merrill caught a touchdown against Central Cambria.
Coupled with dealing with offensive question marks, Penns Valley will also look to re-establish the success it had through the first half against Bald Eagle defensively. It's given up an average of 38 points through its first three games, so improvements there should give it a better shot of getting in the win column.
Friday's game at Penns Valley is set to begin at 7 p.m.
