TIM WEIGHT/For the Express The Bellefonte football team takes the field prior to an earlier game against Penns Valley at Rogers Stadium. The Red Raiders defeated Richland, 16-13, on Friday to improve to 5-3 on the season.

BELLEFONTE – After going into halftime with a 9-0 lead, Bellefonte got the full brunt of a Richland squad that entered Friday’s contest with seven straight wins and a No. 4 ranking in PIAA Class AA. The Rams scored 13 unanswered points to take a lead early in fourth, appearing primed for an eighth straight.

However, Bellefonte didn’t back down, putting a response together just in time. A late touchdown granted the Red Raiders a lead before the fourth-quarter buzzer sounded, and they’d hold to take home the momentous, 16-13 win.

The win improves the Red Raiders’ record to 5-3 on the season, marking their third straight win since starting 2-3. That span features wins over 4-4 Bald Eagle, 4-4 Philipsburg-Osceola and 7-1 Richland.

They’ll look to carry that momentum forward into another tough contest against Bellwood-Antis (6-2). That matchup is set to begin at 7 p.m. next Friday at Rogers Stadium.
