Caton hat trick helps Bellefonte boys soccer cruise past Penns Valley

By KENNY VARNER 3 min read

SPRING MILLS – On Tuesday evening, Bellefonte boys soccer hosted Laurel Highlands foe Penns Valley, looking to get back on track after Saturday’s loss to Hollidaysburg. Seth Caton's hat trick helped do the Red Raiders do just that, leading them to a commanding 5-0 victory over the Rams.

“I thought we played well. We knew coming in that we'd be on a grass field, and I knew after all the football playing and all that stuff, it was going to be a little rough and bumpy," said Bellefonte coach Scott Martz.

"So, a couple of our shots were flying all over the place early. I yelled at them, but they’re like, ‘Coach we got it.’"

Two early goals by the Red Raiders set the pace for the offensive victory. Keegan Timblin logged an unassisted score to open things up, doing so under three minutes into the game.

Penns Valley made some small runs at the Bellefonte backline, but the Rams were sent back frustrated after each run. Right before the 30-minute mark, the Red Raiders were at it again when Jamin Ondraski plastered a strong unassisted goal at 30:01.

Both defenses stood tall for the next 20 minutes of play. But then, a Penns Valley foul called in their own box set the Red Raiders up with a penalty kick opportunity.

Caton set up for the penalty kick and was successful, scoring his first of three goals to put his team went up 3-0 with just under seven minutes left in the stanza. He then finished off the half’s scoring as he was in the right place at the right time and hit his second score of the contest five minutes after the first.

In the second half, Caton ended the game scoring with an unassisted goal to complete the hat trick.

"Overall, I thought we moved the ball well in a smaller field and finished some shots,” said Martz on the scoring barrage. “I do wish we would have scored more on corners.”

With the 5-0 lead, it was time for Bellefonte to get in their substitutes for some playing time. There was no change in the intensity of their defense, as the Red Raiders were able to maintain the shut out until time expired.

“Defensively, I think we locked things down on defense. They did well for us again tonight," said Martz. "It was nice to get everybody in the game there tonight to get ready for playoffs. We’re going to need everybody."

With the win, Bellefonte improved to 12-3 overall and 12-1 in league play.
