Matt Campbell remains committed to QB Becht

By NEIL RUDEL 2 min read

Following Penn State's loss to Michigan on Saturday, Matt Campbell reiterated his confidence in starting quarterback Rocco Becht.

Three days later, that hasn't changed.

Campbell was asked about his quarterback situation during a brief press availability on Tuesday, and he made it clear he's not ready to switch to backup Alex Manske.

Becht committed three turnovers in the second half at Michigan that led to 21 UM points.

Despite that, Campbell said Tuesday: "We have complete faith in Rocco Becht. Rocco has continued to play good football. There are a couple moments he'd love to have back, but that's part of the game.

"From an Alex standpoint, we have great belief that he's going to have a bright future. His time will come, and when that time comes, we'll be excited for that opportunity. But obviously that time is not right now."

Campbell said Manske is "growing," but also pointed out that he "has missed a lot of (practice) time the last two years" due to injury.

The Nittany Lions are 3-4 overall and have lost four straight Big Ten games to start conference play.

They are idle this week before hosting Purdue on Oct. 31.

Campbell said he planned to hit the recruiting trail later Tuesday afternoon.

He said he has a “global perspective” on recruiting and did not sound overly concerned about roster retention in the transfer-portal era.

"My belief is you still have to earn the right to be on the field," he said. "We’re not just going to play players because you’re hoping they’ll stay around.”

Starting at /week.
