‘Deja vu’: Bellefonte girls fall to Hollidaysburg in District 6 Class AAA final for third straight season

By HENRY HUBER 5 min read

PHILIPSBURG – After losing back-to-back district championships to Hollidaysburg in 2024 and 2025, Bellefonte girls soccer's third attempt at returning to the top of District 6 seemed to hold merit. The top-seeded Raiders finished the regular season with an 11-3-1 record. And in Wednesday's District 6 Class AAA final, they weathered multiple early scoring opportunities from Hollidaysburg before taking an early 1-0 lead.

However, as quickly as Bellefonte took that lead, the Golden Tigers responded quicker.

The Red Raiders led for just four minutes and failed to score for the next 70 while Hollidaysburg earned a 2-1 lead early in the second and never looked back, defeating Bellefonte, 2-1, to secure its third straight title on Wednesday night at Philipsburg-Osceola's Mountie Stadium.

It was a loss that felt like Groundhog Day to head coach Stacey Miller and her more seasoned players, as the Red Raiders fell to its consistent district counterpart by one goal for a third straight year. Bellefonte fought hard and played excellent defense, but its offensive opportunities pittered out as it battled gusts of winds and strong defense.

"I feel like our girls gave it everything they had," said Miller on the loss. "In the second half, I feel like we just couldn't beat the extra man on the field, which was the wind. We just struggled with the wind, being able to judge balls. They had the wind, and that was problematic for us."

"I think the girls far exceeded our expectations for the season, and I was proud of them for earning the No. 1 seed and getting to this game," she added.

Much like their previous matchups, the loss featured positives and negatives – the biggest positive coming ten minutes into the first. After seeing its opponent control the early narrative, Bellefonte got its bearings and started creating opportunities, and it wouldn't need long at all to capitalize on one.

An attack in the box saw senior Reese Patterson receive the ball inside of it, without an angle for a shot but with an angle to get her teammate involved.

From the right of the goal, Patterson found Norah Davis streaking down the middle of the box. Davis received the ball and immediately delivered a strike to Hollidaysburg goalkeeper Ellie Jadlocki's right, gifting the Red Raiders a 1-0 lead and early momentum.

"Really proud to see Norah finish one," said Miller on the goal. "Last year, Norah had a season-ending injury and wasn't here for this game. So, it's a full-circle moment to see her be able to come out here and contribute like that."

Despite the momentum boost, Hollidaysburg would resume the control it kicked off with soon after. An attack netted the Golden Tigers their game-tying goal four minutes after Bellefonte went up 1-0. And though the Red Raiders resumed their stout defense from there, it wouldn't help them re-establish their offense.

Following Davis's goal, Bellefonte would fire up eight more shots before the halftime buzzer sounded and another few before Hollidaysburg took a lead. Close calls came and went, like a three-shot barrage near the end of the first and decent shots from Sydney Miller and Izzy Oravis early in the second. But no dice.

Eventually, it was the Golden Tigers that saw a shot find the back of the net to end the stalemate.

Just over ten minutes into the second half, Hollidaysburg freshman Ella Diaz launched an unassisted shot into the top-right corner of the net, right over the out-stretched hands of Bellefonte goalkeeper Ronni Spotts. Of Hollidaysburg's 13 shots on goal, eight were saved by Spotts and three were thwarted by defenders, but that one proved most memorable.

From there, the Golden Tigers shifted their playstyle to defensive, and Bellefonte just didn't have an answer. It went most of the final 30 minutes without a shot on goal, as Hollidaysburg kept it out of its box and burnt clock whenever it had possession.

"They're just very good at countering what we throw at them and switching on the fly based off any changes we make," said Miller on Hollidaysburg. "As soon as they scored, they went defensive. They had their plan, and we had to get more people in their defensive end."

It was a tough conclusion for a team that had serious aspirations of getting back to states this season, as a small senior class headlined by captains Reese Patterson and Sydney Miller moves on with one title to their name. But though those losses sting, there's reason to be excited about the future, with an overall young squad set to return multiple key contributors from this year's run.

"At the beginning of our season, we make goals, and one of the things I was talking to them about afterwards was how many goals they checked off," said Miller. "This senior class is pretty special and we're definitely going to miss them. But as many seniors as we had, we're pretty young as far of our lineup, so we have a lot of girls returning."
