First Quality to shut down Hygienics operation

First Quality Enterprises, Inc. has announced that First Quality Hygienic, Inc., will discontinue manufacturing and selling tampons in summer 2021.

“First Quality remains committed to the feminine care category. The company will continue to provide innovative sanitary pads and liners alongside its adult incontinence products, baby diapers, training and youth pants, and wipes,” the company said in a press release emailed to The Express Wednesday afternoon.

First Quality Hygienic employees will be offered alternative employment opportunities to continue their careers at other First Quality Group companies, the release stated.

Further details, including the reason for the shut-down were not reported in the release, and attempts to speak with local officials at First Quality were not successful.

Clinton County Economic Partnership President Mike Flanagan issued the following statement:

“First Quality told us that this was a tough decision to cease manufacturing at Hygienic, which was the second business started by the Damaghi family following First Quality Products and the adult diaper line.

“The good news is that First Quality will offer all of the approximately 150 Hygienic employees a position at other First Quality operations in McElhattan and Lock Haven/Castanea Township.

“And the other good news is that First Quality remains committed to its other local business operations and that means great news for the Clinton County community,” Flanagan said. “First Quality has been an important part of our area for some 30 years, and we look forward to the next 30.”

Jim Dodge, Chief Financial Officer of First Quality Enterprises, said, “As we close this chapter, we are grateful for the commitment of the First Quality Hygienic team throughout the years. Focusing on our core products will allow us to continue to build a strong innovation pipeline that delivers great everyday value for our customers and consumers.”
