LOCK HAVEN — The new CVS pharmacy store at Bellefonte Avenue and Commerce Street (near McDonald’s) will open Sunday.

The opening had been planned for a few weeks later, but Lock Haven University students will return to town this weekend to start the new semester, and CVS wants to be available to serve them, according to CVS district manager Mike Matthews.

The 13,000-square-foot store will open for business at 9 a.m., Matthews said.

It will be a “soft opening,” taking place when the doors are first opened for business. CVS does not hold opening ceremonies, Matthews said, and the corporation normally opens its new stores on Sundays.

The current CVS in town, in the Clinton Plaza off Walnut Street, will close its doors at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The shelves were bare at the new location 10 days ago but will be fully stocked by Sunday, Matthews said. The store will feature an expanded cosmetics department, complete photo service including passport photos, food and beverage in a bank of refrigerated shelving along one wall, and a drive-through for pharmacy service which will be a key component of the new CVS presence in town, he said.

J.C. Bar Properties Inc. facilitated the construction of this new store behind the Fairfield Inn and near the student housing complex Evergreen Commons. The project included the demolition of the former Drive Plus industrial building that had been shuttered for years and had become an eyesore in the downtown.
