Falling test scores underscore a serious challenge for us all

There are times when information emerges that not only is unexpected, but downright shocking. Similarly, there are instances when new findings merely confirm what people — experts as well as many individuals not regarded as experts — long have anticipated. A recent article in The Express was an example of the latter — on a topic relevant not only in the United States, but throughout the world. The information contained in that article should serve as an important guideline in terms of avoiding the unwanted situation ever again. Actually, there is too much at stake. The ...

Strong stance must be taken on fake images

Legal experts say faked sexual images of real people are so new that federal law — and state law for that matter — dealing with the growing problem is lagging. The recent experience at a New Jersey high school should, however, motivate Congress and/or state Legislatures to enact strong measures and penalties to battle this destructive, horrific and unconscionable enemy of innocence and decency. At that school, it’s alleged that male students posted fake pornographic images made of female students. Deep fakes, or digitally altered images and videos, have exploded along with ...

‘Most pressing problem’ deserves serious attention

Things are not great for many people. Prices at the grocery store are higher — we can all attest to that. Rent is also up. Generally, the cost of living has risen somewhat dramatically in the last few years. Food. Rent. Hygiene. Medical care. Transportation. All of us deserve the opportunity to access these life necessities. Many of us work to earn them. But some cannot work. Some need help. In a story headlined, “Lock Haven’s most pressing problem” in our Thanksgiving Edition last Wednesday, the issue of homelessness and food insecurity was addressed by ...

Be thankful… every day

While we hope you will be sitting around a table with family and friends this Thanksgiving Day and giving thanks for the blessings in your life, we hope that’s not the only day you do it. Thanksgiving is a day to embrace giving thanks every day. By giving thanks continually, we are reminded of how much we do have. Have the attitude of gratitude, we say. Being thankful and giving thanks is worthwhile. It brightens your outlook on life, and we all need that these days. Think of those less fortunate than yourself. Pray for their comfort, health and joy. Be more selfless, ...

Emergency care for children needs scrutiny

There are many good causes with their proverbial hands out, seeking money from the federal government. There always will be. However, the Wall Street Journal, in its Oct. 2 edition, called attention to a need that should spike interest in the mind and heart of every member of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate. Additionally, those elected officials should engage in some determined legwork to identify whether the problem on which the Journal focused is indeed a problem — or not — in their particular sphere of representation. The bottom line is that the people they ...

Vandals spoiling Little Libraries for community

It isn’t uncommon for members of the Rotary Club of Downtown Lock Haven to take to the newspaper or social media to notify the public of vandalism to one of its many Little Libraries. And what a shame that is. The club began the Little Red Library project in 2019 as a way to give back to the community. Since the first libraries were installed in Triangle and Hanna parks, it has since grown to include six total in almost every public park within Lock Haven. Two more are even set to be placed in the Tiger Den Playground and at Riverview Park across the West Branch of the Susquehanna ...
