We all owe them so much

“It’s unimaginable to make such a sacrifice for my freedom, for my son’s freedom,” said Jean-Philippe Bertrand. “You hear about it on the news and you see the pictures. But once you’re here and you see the reality and the sacrifice that has been made for our beautiful country — I wanted to make the trip once in my life to thank all these people to whom we owe so much.” Bertrand used these words to describe why he was visiting Normandy on the anniversary of D-Day last week to an Associated Press reporter — and they are words that reflect a sentiment we believe we all ...

60 years of fun, laughs, adventure at Millbrook Playhouse

It’s been a great 60 years for Millbrook Playhouse. Sure, there have been ups and downs. A nonprofit professional stock theatre, like most nonprofits, experiences its share of struggles. The pandemic didn’t help, for sure. But here we are in 2023 and this vaunted venue that brings so much joy and entertainment to our area — attracting people from all over the country — has just launched its newest season with the opening of "A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline" on the Ryan Main Stage. Congratulations also to Shannon Agnew, Millbrook's new producing artistic director. ...

Does your vote count? Darn right it does

If there is any doubt that your vote doesn’t count, just check out the results of the recent primary election race between two local magisterial district judge candidates. Former Lock Haven city police chief Kristin Smith garnered the Democratic nomination for the position serving District II in Clinton County by just one vote. Yes, one vote. Candidate Heidi Wright was the top vote-getter on the Republican ticket with 959 votes. But Smith survived on the Democratic ballot, earning 265 votes to Wright’s 264. Rarely do one-vote victories occur. But when they do, they ...

It’s really dry out there; be careful!

Our region has had little, if any, rain in the past three weeks (and counting). Not good. We need some rain. We need a steady soaker. To boost our farmers’ crops. To replenish the thousands of household water wells. To replenish our public water reservoirs. To protect the health of our valuable forests and streams. The origins of the drought in the U.S. Northeast can be traced to a series of early season heatwaves that struck northern parts of New England in late-May and now mid-June. Our rainfall deficit is at about four inches — and counting. What can you do to ...

State should ban hand-held phones while driving

The pilot program allowing the use of speed cameras in active work zones in the Philadelphia area, in effect since its approval under Act 86 of 2018, will be expiring this year unless the Pennsylvania General Assembly makes the program permanent. A Capitolwire article published last week reported that state Rep. Ed Neilson, D-Philadelphia, is planning legislation that not only would continue the Philadelphia-area program, but expand it. The problem is that the proposed expansion is too limited. What Neilson, chairman of the House Transportation Committee, wants to do should be ...

Celebrate Memorial Day respectfully

No matter what is happening on this nation’s political and economic fronts — and much is happening — Memorial Day, the holiday we are observing today, should not and does not take a back seat. Only something truly catastrophic might cast Monday’s observance into the background, but even then most Americans would pause in respect to what this day represents. Memorial Day is the day when the nation honors the brave, selfless men and women who gave their lives while in this country’s service. It also is the day each year when Americans put special emphasis on remembering ...
