Vote today, set the tone for November

Today is an important day for area citizens: it is the first chance to weigh in on who will get to serve the community on the various boards that are the lifeblood of local politics. We refer, of course, to today’s primary election. A full slate of candidates across the ideological spectrum have lined up for positions throughout Clinton and Centre counties. Those positions include notable, important decision-makers like county commissioner, school board director and township supervisor — all of which can have a direct impact on voters’ lives ... and finances. Woolrich is leaving? What can be done?

1830 That’s 190 years ago, when America’s oldest outdoor clothing brand was founded as a woolen mill along Plum Run, east of Lock Haven, by English immigrants John Rich and Daniel McCormick, who took horse and buggy from town to town to sell woolen yarn and fabric. Rich bought out McCormick in 1845 and created John Rich & Son. The operation was expanded and moved to the town that would become known as Woolrich. Here are some very recent examples: The Keystone Central Career and Technology Center sent 18 students to Hershey to compete in the SkillsUSA state competition in mid-April. Keystone Central ...

That someone or entity stole $8,000 from the Sugar Valley Volunteer Fire Co. is alarming, but shouldn’t really be surprising. We read about this type of criminal activity a lot these days. Police agencies are seeing an uptick in thefts from bank accounts. Criminals, in various ways, gain a bank account number or a routing number and it’s just trouble from there. We’d bet in the fire company’s case, whoever took the money intially has or will try again—even if the account is blocked. We saw that with a reader who recently told us a check she sent for a payment probably ...

Impact of obstacles to gas production frustrating

We all should find the news that natural gas production in Pennsylvania slipped slightly in 2022 troubling. “Pipeline constraints — mostly due to political and extreme activism — constrict flow to key demand centers, including the Northeast, limiting the ability for more Americans and allies abroad to benefit from clean affordable Pennsylvania-produced natural gas,” David Callahan, president of the Marcellus Shale Coalition, explained to a reporter for the Center Square. The development of natural gas has been a blessing for our region — bringing new, family-sustaining ...
