PPL customers deserve honest answers on billing issues

One-hundred-and-two year old PPL Corp. has long been a provider of electricity to heat and power thousands of homes, businesses, hospitals and industries in our region. Perhaps your family member or neighbor work for the utility. The company has built a reputation of service and trust. That’s why it’s frustrating to learn that PPL, Pennsylvania’s leading electric utility, billed more than 790,000 of its customers much higher sums than any of the affected customers expected or than the company could clearly justify. Households that generally pay $150 to $200 a month for ...

Simply put: Quit smoking and don’t start

Did you know that Pennsylvania is listed as among the states with the worst policies to prevent and reduce tobacco use, according to the American Lung Association’s (ALA) recent 21st annual “State of Tobacco Control” report? In fact, Pennsylvania earned mostly failing grades on the report, but did show an improvement in access to cessation services, moving from an ‘F’ to a ‘D’ grade. Big whoop. The report evaluates state and federal policies on actions taken to eliminate tobacco use and recommends proven-effective tobacco control laws and policies to save lives. Yes, ...

Breakthrough in cold case provides hope

Philadelphia’s “Boy in the Box Mystery” shows why police in every jurisdiction across this country should examine their cold-case-deaths files to determine whether evidence still exists that, with the help of the emerging field of genetic genealogy, could prove productive in helping to unlock the most important long-elusive facts, evidence and secrets of those cases. The naked, badly bruised body of the boy in question, which had been wrapped in a blanket and placed inside a large JCPenney bassinet box, was found on Feb. 25, 1957, in a wooded area of the City of Brotherly ...

It’s all about promotion: We have a great place to visit… and to live

Funds for the program come from monies collected ...

In support of WTL selling methane gas produced from our garbage

No good energy should go to waste. That’s true with humans, and that’s true with real energy. In this case, we’re talking about methane gas generated by decomposing garbage at the Wayne Township Landfill at McElhattan. The landfill operator, the Clinton County Solid Waste Authority (CCSWA), is poised with partners to take on a $15 million, methane gas-capture project so methane gas can be sold to UGI Utilities, the region’s natural gas provider. “Hopefully we are flowing gas by April 1,” Landfill Manager Jay Alexander told The Express for a story published last week. ...

Area critical care service in need of critical solutions

Did you know that, by state law, municipalities must provide fire protection and emergency medical services (EMS) to their residents? That’s right, and it doesn’t matter what a municipality’s capability is — meaning its ability to fund and staff an ambulance service or fire company. Lack of staffing appears to be more of an issue these days than money. And remember, folks, we’re talking about critical, life-saving services. A staffing crunch — a lack of Emergency Medical Technicians or EMTs — is just what rural Western Clinton County is facing. Renovo Ambulance ...
