‘Scary Godmother’ movies were a favorite of my childhood

Very rarely is there a movie or movies that I’ve forgotten that, upon remembering, unleash the level of warm nostalgia quite like “Scary Godmother: Halloween Spooktacular” and “Scary Godmother: The Revenge of Jimmy.”
I recalled this particular pair of movies on Tuesday night while trying to figure out what family-friendly movies I could review this month.
And, I think I hit the nail on the head with this one, since two fellow members of the newsroom gasped joyfully and were excited to remember them.
Halloween Spooktacular premiered in 2003, with The Revenge of Jimmy following two years later in 2005.
Both movies are based on the book series “Scary Godmother” by Jill Thompson.
The first movie follows little Hannah Marie (Britt McKillip) who is tagging along with her mean cousin Jimmy (Alex Doduk) and his three friends Katie, Daryl and Bert while they go trick or treating.
Jimmy doesn’t want Hannah to tag along so he concocts a plan to scare her home. He tells her the story of the “spook house” where a new kid has to leave candy in its basement to keep monsters from eating children.
His plan backfires, however, when — after locking her in the house– the Scary Godmother (Tabitha St. Germaine) appears with her ghost cat Boozle.
Scary Godmother explained she appeared because Hannah needed her; and takes her to the Fright Side on her broom to meet her friends.
While in the Fright Side, Hannah Marie meets all of Scary Godmother’s friends — Mr. Skully Pettibone the skeleton, Harry the werewolf, a fuzzy monster that works scaring kids named Bug-A-Boo, and a vampire family of parents Count Max and Countess Ruby, and 8-year-old son Orson.
At first, Hannah Marie is terrified of the monsters, but soon realizes there’s nothing to be afraid of and joins the group in their annual phantom fest.
Meanwhile, Jimmy and his friends begin to worry about why Hannah Marie hasn’t come out of the house.
Don’t worry though, Scary Godmother and her friends manage to get back at the group of friends in a spooky and terrifying manner.
The Revenge of Jimmy takes place the next Halloween and sees Jimmy attempting to end Halloween to protect himself from the monsters. Meaning Hannah Marie and her friends from the Fright Side have to save the day.
I won’t dive any further into the sequel other than that, since our cast of original characters returns.
Both movies are about 40 minutes each, basically coming together to make the perfect full-length film.
The Scary Godmother movies were an absolute STAPLE in my life growing up. Both were featured on Cartoon Network more than once during October and you can bet your bottom I was tuning in.
Thompson, with her books, created such a fun and unique concept that always left me feeling warm and fuzzy.
Especially as a little kid, I wanted my own Scary Godmother to take me to the Fright Side to take part in an awesome party.
One might even say the Scary Godmother movies may have been the start of my deep love of Halloween — even more than classic movies like “Hocus Pocus” and “Halloweentown.”
For those looking to enjoy a new and unique set of movies with their kids this Halloween, I can’t recommend “Scary Godmother: Halloween Spooktacular” and “Scary Godmother: The Revenge of Jimmy” enough. Not to mention they’re both available for free on YouTube!
Now, with my review completed, it’s time I plan to watch these movies at least three separate times between now and Oct. 31. If you need me, I’ll be finding out how I can decorate my home a la Scary Godmother and perfecting Mr. Skully Pettibone’s dance moves.
