Help Helping Hands Help Others
Helping Hands at United Lutheran Church is a non profit program that helps low income families and senior citizens with items such as toilet paper, paper towels, shampoo, soap, laundry care, cleaning items, ect. They are located at the United Lutheran Church in Lock Haven. They are asking for donations to keep our doors open. Any questions, please feel free to call Kelly Olmstead at 272-209-5912. Donations of any items (or financial support for us to buy items) will be a tremendous help for the program.
Barbours School Reunion
A.J. Barbours School Reunion will be taking place at the old school. All former students and teachers are welcome. It will be on Saturday, Aug. 9, eating at 1 p.m. There will be chicken, hotdogs, drinks and tableware provided. Please bring a dish to share and your old school photos! Would you like to become a Shoe Bank volunteer? The Lock Haven Area Shoe Bank is usually open one Saturday a month, when we have the fun of giving free new shoes to eligible kids and teens. We are looking for more volunteers, including people we can call when we are shorthanded. If you’d like to volunteer or just ask questions about it, please text or call Wendy at 570-295-3443.
Writers Network
The Nittany Valley Writers Network will host an open reading night for all levels of writers on Tuesday, Aug. 12, at 6:30 p.m., in Schlow Library’s Community Room, 211 S. Allen St., State College. Attendees can bring a short writing sample to share, or come to listen and meet other writers. The event is free and open to the public. The Nittany Valley Writers Network is a sharing, supportive community linking local writers of all genres and levels of experience. Steel Horses for Real Horses
The Jersey Shore American Legion Riders Post 36 will host the Steel Horses for Real Horses Benefit Run on Sunday, Aug. 24, at the Jersey Shore American Legion, 320 Seminary St., Jersey Shore. Registration runs from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and is $15 per bike and $10 per passenger. The event is open to all vehicles. This will be a non-structured ride, followed by a hearty meal, a 50/50 drawing and an “Ole American Auction.” Breakfast sandwiches will be available for purchase for $5. Donations needed
Many local cemeteries are struggling with having enough funds to make sure that the grass gets mowed each summer. Whatever cemetery your loved ones are buried in, please consider making a donation now to help with the grass mowing expenses now that spring and summer have arrived.
Grief support at Covenant UMC
Community Grief Support meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month from 6-7 p.m. in the lounge at Covenant United Methodist Church, 44 W. Main St., Lock Haven. The church has a parking lot next to the building. Use the handicap-accessible entrance. This is an ongoing informal group. Its mission is to provide a circle of compassionate listeners who have lost loved ones and are looking for a safe place to talk or just listen to others’ experience and coping strategies. Two facilitators lead the sessions, Sharon Gensib and Pam Brauchli.
