Howard Happenings
CLOTHING BANK
The Light of the World Clothing Bank will be open today, from 2:30 to 5 p.m., and tomorrow, from 9 a.m. to noon, at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 145 W. Linn St., Bellefonte. New donated clothing for everyone will be available, as well as brand new shorts and tops for boys and men. Come and shop for FREE or give a donation if you can!
FIRE NEWS
Snow Shoe Fire Company will have a prize raffle on Aug. 2 at the Snow Shoe carnival grounds from noon to 5 p.m. Prizes include guns and cash.
Howard Fire Company will hold a blood drive at their station on Wednesday, Aug. 6, from 12:30-6 p.m. This blood drive will be in memory and in honor of Earl Thompson. Earl was the blood drive co-ordinator for the Lions and fire company blood drives for more than 30 years. Earl would always make sure that the fire hall was reserved and that the food was available for those who donated. Earl even drove around to put up the signs each month to advertise the blood drives.
Donors of all blood types are needed since the blood bank supply is always low during the summer months. We’d like many folks to give blood to honor Earl’s memory at this blood drive and to become regular donors at the Howard fire hall.
CHEER CLUB
Senior Cheer Club met at Bald Eagle State Park for their July 3 meeting. Everyone enjoyed a picnic at the pavilion and watching the activities around us. There were boaters and kayakers on the lake, swimmers at the beach and different species of birds singing nearby. It was a beautiful day for a picnic and celebrating our nation’s birthday.
Club secretary Jane Confer was absent since she was visiting family in New York, but the meeting minutes and roll call duties were easily transferred to her sister-in-law, Ann Williams. There were 20 in attendance and each paid their monthly $2 dues.
We sang Happy Birthday to Pat Dickey, Becky Holter and Cindy Wensel who were celebrating birthdays during July. Only Pat was there, but we hope Becky and Cindy had a good day for their birthdays.
Devotions were given by Judy Cain. She read from Psalm 24, verses 1-10.
Judy also shared a poem, “What We Do For God and Country,” by Clay Harrison.
It was noted that Cheer Club member Sara Graham passed away on June 25 at the age of 99. Larry shared that he had known Sara his whole life — she was his Sunday School teacher when he was just a boy. Sara had a collection of cups that her daughter, Patricia Lukens, will gift to Cheer Club members to be used as mementos or for our Chinese Auction games.
We will continue to think of Sara as we still use the Bingo cards that she donated years ago to the Cheer Club. Bingo games are played every other month with small donated prizes that each of us brings to share.
Senior Cheer Club will make a $50 donation to the Friendship Community Center in Sara’s memory.
Larry shared that he went to Sara’s viewing and saw Vince Warr there, which was a delight since Vince had been in our prayers as he was facing very serious vertebrae/spinal surgery. Vince is doing much better after surgery, is moving about and continuing to improve.
Cheer Club received a thank you from Fulmer’s Personal Care Home for the flowers and items that we donated recently.
We were happy to have Michele Young at our June Cheer Club meeting. She is Faye Confer’s daughter, and Michele and her husband, Steve, had made a quick trip from their home in Texas to visit with Faye and other family members for a few days. We loved seeing Michele, but Steve stood us up since he was running errands and was gallivanting to Harrisburg to help his mother catch a plane. For those who know Steve, you know he’s a jokester and loves to get a rise out of folks… but this time the joke was on him because he missed seeing all of us at Cheer Club and eating all our delicious desserts.
Senior Cheer Club will meet on Thurday, Aug. 7, at the Friendship Community Center in Beech Creek. Anyone 55 years of age and older is invited to attend. We meet at noon, enjoy a potluck lunch and then have a short meeting followed by games. This month will be a Chinese Auction, so bring an unwrapped item.

FLEA MARKET
Pleasant Gap Fire Company will have a weekly flea market each Thursday at the fire company carnival grounds. The vendor fee of $20 will benefit the PGFC. Vendors will be set up starting at 7 a.m., weather permitting, each week. If shopper turnout is low, vendors begin packing up and departing, so come before noon for the best shopping experiences.
New vendors are invited, and are required to bring their own outdoor canopies and tables for the outside market. There are a few buildings/pavilions at the grounds that vendors can use, but they are on a first come basis. There are some trees for shade for vendors to choose those spots as well. Call Mark at 814-355-2753 for vendor information.
Food is also available during the day, too! Relay for Life will be providing food on certain days during the flea market. Again, come early to get something to eat before the vendors pack up to leave.
The flea market is expected to continue through August and maybe into September, so long as vendor and customer interest continues. The flea market is expected to be open during Grange Fair time, too! Stop by and check this new flea market out! The flea market/fire station location is at 475 Robinson Lane, Pleasant Gap. More info is available by contacting Greg at ggmar1@hotmail.com or call 814-883-3124.
