CURTIN

VILLAGE EVENT

The public is invited to the annual Heritage Day fundraiser at Eagle Iron Works and Curtin Village on Sunday, Sept.14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is a celebration of traditional crafts and frontier ingenuity. Throughout Heritage Day, visitors of all ages will have the opportunity to interact with traditional artisans and tour the grounds and buildings.

Featured this year will be Paul Fagley, long-time environmental education specialist at Greenwood Furnace State Park. Fagley will demonstrate 19th-century charcoal making. Eagle Iron Works was the longest and last operating charcoal-fired iron production and processing facility in Pennsylvania, and is the only place in the state where visitors can view all major components of an old-time iron-making plantation.

An interesting fact: Fueling an iron furnace required charcoal produced from one acre of timber per day.

Live demonstrations will be provided by a tinsmith, shoemaker and a blacksmith. The Curtin Mansion and iron furnace complex will be open for guided tours. Discover the evolution of women’s aprons through the decades, stroll through the restored herb garden and enjoy old-fashioned games. Food and refreshments will be available for purchase throughout the day. Cap off your visit with a stop at the Pop-up Civil War Museum at 3 p.m. This Pop-Up Museum is an opportunity for the public to share a personal story or a Civil War object. Local historians will aid in answering questions, identifying objects and facilitating conversation.

For more info, visit www.curtinvillage.com, or their Facebook page or call Sue at 570-220-9290.
