BELLEFONTE — There are a lot of Halloween displays in Bellefonte. Some are spooky, some are cute and some are very creative.
Teresa Fortney’s display covers all three categories.
Fortney has a pair of five-foot skeletons on display in the front yard of her Bellefonte home. If you’ve seen the skeletons, you know they aren’t always in the same spot. They move. They change positions. They change outfits. They have personality.
Just like the popular “Elf on the Shelf,” Fortney makes certain that the skeletons mix it up from day to day.
“I’ve wanted to do it for a few years and never did,” Fortney said of the display. “I really don’t remember (where I got the idea). Maybe Pintrest.”

Wherever Fortney got the idea, it has been a hit with family, friends, neighbors and those who happen to be just driving by. A school bus that makes a run through her neighborhood has made it a point to make sure that students see the display.
“The school bus driver slows down so the kids can see it. It really puts a smile on their faces,” Fortney said.
Every day, without fail, the skeletons are doing something different. For example, one day, she had them ready for a rain storm, complete with an umbrella and poncho. Another day, they were washing the car. For Bellefonte’s Homecoming, she dressed the skeletons in Red Raider football jerseys. Most recently, she positioned the skeletons for a picnic lunch.
“I think they’re going to start dating,” Fortney said with a laugh. “It’s a developing story.”
Fortney said that families in her neighboorhood have “Boo’d” each other over the years, but this is something completely different. The skeletons, which are made of hard plastic, are “rather pricey,” Fortney said, so she takes good care of them.
Fortney has three sons. Two are college-age and one is 11. She said that her 11-year-old is having a lot of fun with it.
And with just a week to go until Halloween, keep an eye out for the relationship between the skeletons to progress rapidly. There will likely be more dates over the last week in October before they are put away for the season.
“With all the gloom and doom in the world,” Fortney said, “this has been something fun.”
