JS Board fills positions, prepares for new school year
JERSEY SHORE — The appointment of a second-grade teacher at Salladasburg Elementary School was praised by both parents and the district administration at the Jersey Shore Area School Board meeting recently.
Bethany Howell was hired to serve in the position at a salary of $46,479 per year.
District Superintendent Dr. Brian Ulmer praised parents for advocating for the position and parents thanked the board for “speedily hiring” the teacher.
In other business, the board approved two agreements. They are an agreement between the district and Community Services Group for mental health psychiatric school-based outpatient services from Aug. 20, 2021 through Aug. 19, 2022, and an agreement with Lycoming-Clinton Joinder Board for school-based outreach and student assistance service for the upcoming school year.
The board also approved the establishment of the Olive L. Gilhart scholarship and fund and the recommended scholarship criteria.
Under personnel items, the following positions were filled at stipend or salary listed:
— Grade level leaders: Lisa Cenimo, Kindergarten; Ann Knipe, first grade; Theresa Caimi, second; Diane Mantek, third; Alison Confer, fourth; Nicole Allison, fifth, $1,000 each.
— School-wide positive behavior leaders: Courtney Weidler, Avis; Alison Confer, Avis; Adrienne Miller, JSAE; Jodi Woleslagle JSAE; Roxanne Crist, Salldasburg,; Beth Gill, Salladasburg; Krista Callahan, middle school; Erin Bonsell, middle school, $200 each.
— Energy leaders: Heath Rager, Energy Champ, high school $500; Tracy Silvis, middle school, $400; Holly Dittmar, Avis & Salladasburg, $400.

— Timothy Dershem, high school business education teacher, $87,813 per year. Dersham’s appointed was approved by a 5-3 vote, with those voting against indicating that it was the amount of his salary that they opposed. Voting for the appointment were Harry Brungard, Angela Grant and Wayne Kinley. Voting in favor were, Patrice Doebler, Nancy Petrosky, Michelle Stemmler, Mary Thomas and Craig Allen. Board member David Becker was absent.
— Allison Tripoli, 4th grade teacher at Jersey Shore Area Elementary School, $56,240 per year.
The following teachers were appointed as mentors at a stipend of $500: Cindy Ferguson, Christ Lahr, Andrea Bowers, Rock Griswold, Teri Dolan-Ward, Lisa Eiswerth and Sarah Kuehne.
The board also accepted the resignation of Becker as board member. It was noted that they now have 30 days to fill the position.
Ulmer announced that at the next board meeting scheduled for Aug. 23, Hunt Engineering will be presenting a list of options for using $2 million in capital improvement funding from the federal government. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at the district board room, 175 A & P Drive.
