2nd annual memorial cruise is Sunday in SV
AMBER MORRIS/THE EXPRESS Dan Tyson’s ‘68 Roadrunner, driven by his son, John Paul Tyson, leads the way at the 2022 Memorial Cruise held in his remembrance.
LOGANTON — If you like classic or flashy cars, Sugar Valley is the place to be this Sunday, May 28, for the Second Annual Dan Tyson Memorial Cruise.
Dan Tyson, of Loganton, passed away suddenly in November of 2021, leaving behind memories of a blue eyed, joke telling fellow who loved Memorial Day, classic cars and his town.
He is remembered for his vital part in helping to organize the Loganton Memorial Day parade, and spent hours restoring and replacing flag holders for the graves of local veterans.
For many people, their vision of Dan is of him driving his olive green 1968 Roadrunner at every Loganton Memorial Day parade for 18 years, leading the classic and vintage automobiles.
The Memorial Day weekend is particularly significant to Dan’s friends and family, since it was so important to him, and last year, those closest to him organized a memorial cruise around Sugar Valley in his honor.
To honor the memory of Dan Tyson, his friends and family have put together the Dan Tyson Memorial Cruise this Sunday. Interested parties can participate in the drive by meeting at the Sugar Valley Charter School, 236 E. Main St., Loganton, at noon to line up.
The convoy will depart at 2 p.m. and will cover the circumference of Sugar Valley via Valley Roads and Winter Roads beginning from Loganton to Tylersville on West Valley Road, then head east to Carroll via the entirety of Winter Road, finally turning left onto East Valley Road and driving five miles to end up back in Loganton at the Pizza Mill, beside Dan’s home on South Mill Street.
Dan’s son, John Paul Tyson, will lead in the iconic green Roadrunner and says the tradition is bound to go on for many years to come.
“My Dad started the cruise in 2020 when we didn’t have the parade due to COVID because he thought it was important to do something for Memorial Day,” John Paul explained. “After he passed, we decided to keep the cruise going in his honor because this holiday meant so much to him. I think it’s a great event that anyone is welcome to participate in that includes the entire valley.”
In case of inclement weather, the cruise will be the following weekend on Sunday, June 4.
