WEST POINT, N.Y. — Archie Walker, a first-year cadet at the United States Military Academy, had the honor of serving in a regimental leadership role during West Point’s Plebe-Parent Weekend in March.

A 2025 graduate of Central Mountain High School and an applied psychology major at the academy, Walker, 18, of Lock Haven, was appointed as the S-6 communications officer for her regiment.

At West Point, assignments for Plebe-Parent Weekend are designed to give fourth-class cadets (freshmen) their first substantive leadership experience, while the upper three classes depart for spring break.

Plebe-Parent Weekend is one of the first opportunities for families to reconnect with their cadets after the start of the academic year. The weekend offers families a closer look at cadet life and the milestones they have achieved since arrival.

Walker said she interviewed for her battalion’s command sergeant major position but was elevated to the regimental level by her superiors.

The regimental S-6 serves as the principal staff officer responsible for signal support, communications and information systems.

“I made sure everything was running smoothly, that everyone was at formations on time and ready for the parade and the banquet,” Walker said.

While in the role, she served alongside the cadet commander for the regiment.

“I wasn’t really expecting to get all the way up to the regiment level,” Walker said. “It was pretty cool seeing how everything works.”

At the academy, Walker also participates in the Army Cycling Team, her company’s Sandhurst International Military Skills Competition team and the WKDT radio club.

After graduating, Walker will serve her country for five years as an Army officer.

Starting at $3.69/week.
