In the Parks

Various local parks will offer programs that folks may be interested in attending. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The programs may be modified or cancelled in the event of severe weather or community guidelines.

Frog Pond Fun!

HOWARD — Join the park naturalist on Saturday, Aug. 9, to discover the diverse species found at the Bald Eagle State Park pond such as frogs, tadpoles, salamanders and insects and how they benefit the world around us! Participants will have the opportunity to catch and ID critters that live in the Frog Pond. All nets and materials will be provided. Stop by the Frog Pond anytime during the program time-frame from 10-11:30 a.m. Parking is available at the Winter Launch, across the street from the gated road that leads to the Frog Pond. The walk is flat, grassy and less than .25 miles.

DiscoverE Bug Hunt

HOWARD — This program is geared toward children, but all ages are welcome to attend. Go on a bug hunt with the Bald Eagle State Park naturalist on Wednesday, Aug. 13, to learn about various species of bugs. We will use nets to catch and identify many specimens! All materials will be provided. Meet in the parking lot for pavilion 5 at 10 a.m.

Children not already in the DiscoverE program can receive their very own folder and begin participating.

Birds of Hyner

HYNER — On Friday, Aug. 15, at 3:30 p.m., at Hyner Run State Park, join the naturalist to learn about some different “Birds of Hyner” at Hyner Run State Park. There will be a craft. Meet at the amphitheater by the pool.

Evening birding

WATERVILLE — On Friday, Aug. 15, at 7:30 p.m., join the naturalist at Little Pine State Park for some “Evening Birding” on the Lake Shore Trail. Topics will include the different birds that live at the park and how to identify them. Please bring your own binoculars and other birding gear. Meet at the beginning of the Lake Shore Trail at the kiosk at the dam.

Nature Journaling Club

HOWARD — Join Autumn Hanley, PA Master Naturalist Trainee at Bald Eagle State Park for a Nature Journaling session on Sunday, Aug. 17, from 1-2:30 p.m. Meet at Pavilion 3 at the beach. Club participants will be outdoors for the entirety of the session, rain or shine. Shelter in case of rain will be under pavilion 3 in the beach area. Participants will want to bring your nature journal and art supplies along!

Nature’s villains

HOWARD — They aren’t quite evil stepmothers or sea witches… but they’re villains nonetheless! Join the park naturalist at Bald Eagle State Park on Thursday, Aug. 21, for a short walk to learn about nature’s villains. We are going to discuss poison ivy, deer ticks and more of nature’s villains! Please dress for the weather. We will be meeting at Pavilion 6 in the Beach Area at 10 a.m. for the one hour program.
