In the parks

Various local parks will offer programs that folks may be interested in attending. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The programs may be modified or cancelled in the event of severe weather or community guidelines.

Easter egg hunt

COBURN — This is not your traditional Easter egg hunt, but rather this program involves following riddles and collecting clues at Poe Valley State Park for a prize at the end.

Since the Easter bunny is a very busy bunny, this year he got a little help from his bird friends. Our local birds, and a few special visitors, hid a couple of their own eggs around Poe Valley and now we need your help to find them! They’ll talk about birds and their nests, and then you’ll follow the clues the birds left for you to find their eggs. Collect all the eggs and return them back to the park naturalist for a prize! For those who attended last year: please note there are different clues!

The egg hunt is designed for children ages five and up. The program begins at 1:30 on Saturday, April 4.

Vernal Pool

Investigation

MIFFLINBURG — Vernal pools are one of the most special habitats at RB Winter State Park, because many of our native amphibians and invertebrates depend on these pools for survival. On Friday, April 10, at 1 p.m., join the park educator while we visit and explore some of the vernal pools in the park. They will be discovering how these pools form, who uses them and much more! Areas may be muddy so it is recommended that waterproof shoes or boots be worn. Meet at the Environmental Learning Center.

If you need an accommodation to participate in park activities due to a disability, please contact the park you plan to visit. With at least seven days’ notice, interpreters for people who are deaf or hard of hearing are available for programs. For program questions or accommodations, contact the park educator at rebharner@pa.gov or 570-966-1455.

This program will also be held on Friday, April 17, beginning at 1 p.m., as well.

Birding at Eagle Watch

WATERVILLE — Stop by the Eagle Watch at Little Pine State Park on Friday, April 17, to see what birds are out, and also how to identify them. Please bring your own binoculars and other bird watching gear. Meet at Eagle Watch Area. The program runs from 9:30-11:30 a.m.

Spring Route 192 Clean-up

MIFFLINBURG — Join with the Friends of R. B. Winter State Park for the Annual Spring Clean-Up of Route 192! This year’s Spring Clean-Up will be held on Saturday, April 18, from 9 a.m. to noon. After the clean-up the Friends will provide lunch to the volunteers. In the event of rain, the clean-up will be rescheduled for Saturday, May 16. Volunteers should meet at the Environmental Learning Center at 9 a.m. and we’ll then divide into groups for the cleanup!

The Friends will be providing gloves, trash bags and safety vests. Make sure to bring a water bottle and weather-appropriate clothing. Since they’ll be working in areas of grass along the edges of the road, insect repellent and checking for ticks afterward is highly recommended! Registration is required!

Earth Day Weekend Tree Planting

COBURN — Looking for a special way to spend your Earth Day weekend? Grab your family and friends and come out to help beautify Poe Valley State Park on Saturday, April 25, beginning at 10:30 a.m.! This Earth Day weekend, park staff are planting trees in the park and we need your help! Tools and instruction will be provided.

Kids are more than welcome to come help, but anyone under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

Please wear sturdy shoes, work clothes, work gloves and dress for the weather. They recommend bringing water to stay hydrated.

They ask that you please register with the “Register” for this event so park staff can be prepared for the day. If you are registering more than one person, you do not need to register individually, you may register as a group/family, but please register the number of people that will be attending this program.

For any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to the park naturalist at korndorf@pa.gov.

*We will be meeting at the Poe Valley Amphitheater at 10:30 a.m. to discuss the game plan before we start digging!

JERSEY SHORE — Celebrate Earth Week by giving back to Ravensburg State Park to keep the park healthy and beautiful!
