Police investigating ‘sound of explosion’ at University Park building

STATE COLLEGE — Police, fire officials and engineers are investigating an incident reported around 1:35 p.m. Wednesday at the Susan Welch Liberal Arts Building on Penn State’s University Park campus, according to the university.

No injuries were reported, and Penn State said there is no ongoing threat to campus.

University officials advised people to avoid the area around the building, located at 137 Fischer Road near the intersection with Allen Road.

Dispatch reports indicated witnesses heard a loud boom, and pictures circulating online showed a substantial crack in an interior wall. Additional reports said the floor of the building settled by about two inches.

The building opened in May of this year.

Fischer Road, between the Susan Welch Liberal Arts Building and Allen Road, remains closed until further notice, according to Penn State Transportation Services.

Starting at $3.69/week.
