PSP: SCI Benner inmate dies in apparent suicide

BELLEFONTE — A reported death by the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections at SCI Benner in Bellefonte was the result of an apparent suicide, according to state police at Rockview.

According to a release by DOC, it was reported inmate Ryan James Paige, 36, passed away on Friday, Jan. 30, at Mount Nittany Medical Center.

“Paige was found unresponsive in his cell on Jan. 29, 2026. Emergency personnel were notified and life-saving measures were administered by members of the Unit Team until emergency medical services arrived,” the release said. “Paige was taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center where he later passed.”

Troopers from PSP Rockview Barracks were called to the scene to investigate.

According to police, “evidence of an apparent suicide were observed by investigators on scene.”

The case continues pending further investigation by PSP.

The DOC said in its release that Paige was serving a 28-year, 7-month to 62-year sentence for third-degree murder on a Pike County conviction.

He arrived at SCI Benner Township on Oct. 31, 2024.

The deceased’s next-of-kin has been notified.
