Martin ‘Marty’ C. Schreckengast

Martin ‘Marty’ C. Schreckengast
Martin “Marty” C. Schreckengast, 82, of Bellefonte, passed away at home on Monday, April 28, 2025. Marty was born in Huntingdon County in 1943. He was the only child of Clifford N. and Martha (Newpher) Schreckengast, both of whom preceded him in death.
Marty was a graduate of Bellefonte High School. He subsequently enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, attaining the rank of Airman First Class. His specialty was air transportation. Marty served in a variety of stateside duty stations, in Europe, the Philippines and Vietnam.
After being honorably discharged, Marty embarked on a 34-year career with American Airlines. He served in a variety of supervisory positions in Detroit and Pittsburgh. Upon retiring from the airline in Pittsburgh, Marty returned to Bellefonte, where he lived in his childhood home.
Marty was a regular at the Bellefonte YMCA weight room until his recent bout with leukemia. His personality, quick wit and sense of humor cultivated many friendships. Marty regularly visited the Weis Market, where he purchased the Lock Haven Express. Many there knew him by his first name. He will be sorely missed by his friends, neighbors and fellow church members.
Marty was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bellefonte, the American Legion Post 33 and Elks Lodge 1094. He was an avid Penn State football, Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates fan.
After successful treatment for leukemia at Penn State Hershey this past March and April, Marty returned home to comfortable surroundings. Although unable to return to the gym for the time being, he was committed to restarting his exercise regimen and getting back to normal life. Unfortunately, he never fulfilled that desire.
Marty is survived by several distant cousins.
Family and friends will be received on Monday, May 12, 2025, from 10-11 a.m., at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 216 McAllister Street, Bellefonte. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m., at the church, with The Rev. William Osman officiating. Burial services will immediately follow at Centre County Memorial Park in State College. Arrangements are under the direction of Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc. in Bellefonte.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Marty’s memory to the Bellefonte YMCA at 125 W. High Street, Bellefonte, PA 16823.
