Re: “You can’t hide from war crimes by calling them ‘fake news’,” Dec. 4

During NATO’s illegal and vicious war on Serbia in 1999, the Varvarin Bridge was bombed initially killing three civilians. American planes later returned to the site as people from a nearby market and Orthodox Church rushed to help the bombing victims to bomb again killing an additional seven people (10 in total) and seriously injuring 17 — all civilians. To date, no one was ever charged for this war crime. And yet, the obtuse US State Department can’t understand why Serbians (who were our allies in two world wars) still regard the US with deep suspicion.
Nothing has changed today as our ‘leaders’ think that they can indiscriminately murder civilians with no consequences — even returning to the crime scene to kill more. Though Pete Hegeseth may never face consequences for his barbaric actions (similar to Wesley Clark and Bill Clinton) America will suffer in the long run as a majority of civilized humanity will never forget what was done in the name of all Americans.
This is why we need a multipolar world. America just cannot be trusted as the policeman of the world. When innocent human beings are murdered for nothing and our president and his fanatical ‘yes men’ celebrate this, something is fundamentally wrong and America’s days are numbered as a superpower. One way or another, there will be blowback for all of the violence and mayhem we have caused.
At a minimum, Pete Hegseth should step down or be fired from his position. He has not helped the cause of peace but instead set the stage for more costly and endless war that is not in our national interest.
