Public parks aren’t development opportunities. A historic park serves as a warning

I thought the University of Louisville had listened. Two years ago, the university hosted public meetings about the prospect of developing Stansbury Park, a historic Olmsted-designed park at the edge of campus. The community pushed back, and the idea seemed to disappear. Then, in August, U of L President Gerry Bradley listed Stansbury Park development among his fiscal year 2027 priorities. So here we are again, asking the question: Shouldn’t the community have input when it comes to the fate of a public park? Let’s be clear. The university does not own this park, but its ...

An argument for hydrogen

John E. Haines Renovo America proved a hydrogen car worked dependably over 50 years ago, when it drove one around on the moon. There are many advantages to a hydrogen vehicle. First of all it gets zero emissions. Another advantage is that it only takes 4.5 minutes to refuel. And driving a hydrogen car is actually safer then gasoline. Another advantage is that the fuel can be much cheaper, when production is scaled up. Currently CSX is building a fleet of hydrogen fueled locomotives at their Huntington, W.V. shop. What they do is remove the diesel engine and install a hydrogen ...

Dear Annie: Doing the work but still a work in progress

Dear Annie: A lot of things improved when I got sober five years ago. I left a toxic job and started my own business, where I’ve made some good friends. I improved my relationship with my kids, now 7 and 9, so much that I became the preferred parent. I’m even healthier thanks to a new dog who loves walking and comes almost everywhere with me. The two areas that haven’t improved are my relationship with my wife and with my parents and siblings. The way they treated me was the reason I drank. That’s not an excuse, but I don’t think it was fair to be treated so poorly, either. ...

Data centers or no data centers?

Craig Seasholtz Avis Are data centers good or bad for Pennsylvanians? Recent political ads attacking Stacy Garrity over her support for data-center development invite voters to view the issue in simple, partisan terms. But the question deserves more than campaign rhetoric. Pennsylvanians should weigh both the consequences of building data centers and the consequences of refusing to build them. Consider how often you use email, cloud storage, search engines, social media, video calls, online banking, streaming services, smartphone apps or GPS navigation. Data centers support ...

Unexpected furniture can make for neat — and functional — pieces

Furniture can take unexpected forms, especially in contemporary design. From the late twentieth century onward, advances in technology created a wealth of new materials and construction techniques for designers to use, and social and cultural changes encouraged experimental approaches with new ...

DEAR DR. ROACH: I read your recent column on people with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) needing to urinate more than others. What about those who have central sleep apnea (CSA)? I’m a 74-year-old male who’s taking medications for an enlarged prostate, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure, which are all under control. I urinate maybe twice a night during my sleep, sometimes not at all. I had a sleep study done in 2017, which showed CSA that wasn’t controlled by the end of the study. A CPAP device didn’t help, and I’m now using a BiPAP machine. Does the frequent urination ...
